Big Weekend at McKee Botanical Garden
The competition won't be among photographers at the Waterlily Celebration at McKee Botanical Garden this year. The 16th annual event, Saturday, June 19, will have the blooms themselves vying for attention.

They've been doing just that since McKee's early days in the 1930s, drawing amateur gardeners and professional horticulturists as well as photographers to learn about growing and caring for them. The McKee collection has more than 80 varieties, both day and night blooming, most of them potted but around 100 plants labelled free range. The garden will open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday to give visitors a chance to catch the night bloomers before they close up for the day.

Experts will be on hand for demonstrations and answering questions, and vendors will be there with aquatic plants and bromeliads.
Sunday is McKee's celebration of Father's Day, with the gift of free admission for "all fathers (fathers, step-fathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great grandfathers) with any paid admission to the Garden." McKee Botanical Garden's executive director, Christine Hobart, said, "Nothing says 'we love and appreciate you' more than a day of nature and a leisurely stroll through the majestic pathways of McKee while spending time with family."

Garden Hours: Tuesday – Saturday (10 am – 5 pm), Sunday (Noon – 5 pm). Last admission ticket sold at 4 pm. The Children’s Garden closes at 4:30 pm. The Garden Cafe will be open Sunday for Father's Day lunch treats.

The garden is open until 5 but the last ticket is sold at 4 p.m. 3501 US Hwy 1, Vero Beach.

Riverside Theatre's Cast Chat with the Late Warren Kelley
Riverside Theatre audiences have laughed and cried over the years when actor Warren Kelley was on stage. The sad news of his passing arrived this week; Riverside's Cast Chat with him, featured here, will be a bittersweet reminder of what we've lost. His last show in Vero Beach was The Mystery of Edwin Drood in 2018.

Oscar Sales, Riverside's marketing director, said,"Warren was in the first production of the season when I arrived in 2005. He was amazing on stage, but I loved the man he was off stage. A very generous, thoughtful, and kind gentleman (In every sense of the word). He really was a living history of Riverside having done 12 shows here since 1994. He was dearly loved by staff, actors and theatre patrons."
A moving tribute to Warren is posted on his Facebook page, still available for friends and fans to add their memories and comments.

The space-sharing cooperative will allow students to resume classes while the Theatre works to complete the Conservatory’s permanent space as part as of its current expansion project.
A Fan's Personal Reflection on the Closing of the Foosaner Art Museum
If you're an executive director of an art museum, chances are pretty good you've experienced a fair number of them as you grew in your career. When you find one special one that becomes an old friend through all the changes in its life, it's a sad, sad day when it closes for good.

J. Marshall Adams is executive director at the A.E.Backus Museum & Gallery in Fort Pierce but wrote this tribute to the Foosaner Museum as a fan, a civilian, on his Facebook page this week and has given Arts Blast permission to share it.
A #museumclosing story - This is a tough one, trigger warning to my friends who are part of this story. And it's a long one.
We made a last pilgrimage yesterday afternoon to the Foosaner Art Museum (née Brevard Museum of Art and Science, née Brevard Art Museum, née Brevard Art Center and Museum) in Melbourne in its final days as an operating arts institution, to say goodbye.
Carrie worked here from 1997-2002-ish, officially doing PR / marketing stuff. As anyone who has worked in a small institution knows, keeping everything going is an all-hands-on-deck labor of love. She recalls with fondness when the museum was alive with activity -- the creative exhibitions, the lectures, the studio programs, the kids' summer camps, receptions and parties -- laughing about "chopping broccoli", mastering the folding tables and chairs, serving at bistro dinners, coordinating 5Ks, and hauling beer coolers for Jazz Fridays back in the day. Emily was the "museum baby" who was lucky to be fussed over by the staff and volunteers. The place and its people were special to Carrie. And some of her friends there later became my friends and professional colleagues.
Later in 2011, Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) took over the museum, after opening the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts on campus in 2009, and a new era was illumined. It seems now that it wasn't sunlight at the end of the tunnel. Closing the Foo was a slow and faltering pre-COVID decision, but the abrupt closing last May of the Funk Center (named for the delightful patron of the arts who frequently came to my programs in Vero) was a startling and fatal bolt that pierced the cultural sector.
At the Funk, the campus and the community suffered a sudden and shocking amputation. At the Foo, that community's arts district has had its institutional heart, the art museum, severed from it. The body is still in spasms, lurching about, not fully aware of the critical loss as the spirit hovers uncertainly above.
The case study for this dreadful episode will include breaks in leadership; the changing dynamics of support (generational, transient, transactional); the effects of drought and erosion on grassroots efforts; the pitfalls of partnership and the mis-match of institutional needs; the breach in public trust for a nonprofit institution serving the community; questions of stewardship with donors and the spirit of their intent; talented staff scattered and drained away; heart-rending and difficult efforts to responsibly transfer collected works of art to other institutions and to communities that will value them more; the heroically sad final programming of producing an emotional closing video, a community response board, installations and memories from many years of art school teaching, old exhibition banners, volunteer scrapbooks and displays, including a special display for the Funk Center that never had time for a farewell ... and one final art exhibition to close 43 years of beauty, struggle, creativity, laughter, inspiration, and priceless contributions by a talented few to the quality of life for all.
It's a shame that some people see "priceless" and some people see "worthless." It's a loss. It's a warning. It's a wound and it's a trauma.
I'm thinking of my Foo and Funk friends, I'm remembering Ruth, I'm worried as a 25-year career museum professional. I'm full, and I'm empty.
Museum Updates

Flag Day has been celebrated in America on June 14th since the Gilded Age, with the first celebration being held in Wisconsin in 1885.

Museum visitors will find examples of the 20 versions of the American flag that flew over our country during Henry Flagler's lifetime (1830-1913) on display in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion from Tuesday, June 15th through Sunday, July 4th.

Flagler Museum Returns to Pre-pandemic Admissions Experience

PALM BEACH, FL - The Henry Morrison Flagler Museum (One Whitehall Way, Palm Beach, FL) is returning to its pre-pandemic admission procedures.

The Museum no longer requires visitors to pre-purchase tickets or to choose an entry time for general admission. The Museum has also lifted limitations on party size. Cash is being accepted again both at the admissions kiosk and in the Museum Store.

Masks or face coverings are optional for visitors. Hand sanitizer stations remain strategically in place throughout Whitehall and the Flagler Kenan Pavilion, and the Museum is continuing its stringent cleaning protocols per its accreditation as a GBAC Star Facility.

Complimentary audio tour wands are once again being offered as one of the Museum's multi-lingual, self-guided tour options. A new, enhanced cleaning procedure is in place for these important interpretive devices. Other options include the Flagler Museum app (available for download to personal devices) and paper self-guide brochures. Language options include English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese.

Group and school tours have not yet resumed. The Museum continues to offer its previously announced Exclusive Access Package for parties of up to 10 people who are interested in a private touring experience at Whitehall.
