Hi friend,

Never in the history of Massachusetts has a candidate for Attorney General been supported by a corporate superPAC.

Not once. Until now.

To be the People’s Lawyer, the Attorney General needs to be independent of corporate special interest money.

That’s why I’m disappointed that one of my opponents has refused repeated calls to shut down the corporate superPAC that raised $1.6 million last year to support her campaign for mayor of Boston.

The Better Boston Independent Expenditure Committee – which describes itself as “an independent expenditure committee in support of Andrea Campbell” – raised $1.6 million in the past year from charter-school backers, for-profit healthcare companies, developers, and senior executives at Bain Capital. If we want an Attorney General who stands up for universal access to health care, superPACs funded by for-profit healthcare companies cannot flood the airwaves with advertisements. If we want the AG to stand up for affordable housing, developers shouldn’t be the ones funding the campaign. If we want the AG to stand up for educational equality and our public schools, charter school backers like the Walton family cannot play a major role in supporting a candidate. If we want the AG to stand up for consumers and workers, Bain Capital can’t spend huge amounts of money to support one of the candidates.

No other 2022 candidate for statewide office is supported by a corporate superPAC. Not the candidates for Governor. Not the candidates for Lieutenant Governor. Not the candidates for Secretary of State. Not the candidates for Auditor.

If – for the first time in Massachusetts history – superPACs are allowed to play a role in the campaign for the next Attorney General, that would set a dangerous precedent.

The Attorney General should stand up for consumers, for workers, for universal health care and great schools, and for an economy that works for everyone. Because that’s what the People’s lawyer does. And that’s the kind of Attorney General I will be. If you believe in that vision for the office, I hope you’ll join our grassroots campaign.
