MORE THAN TWELVE PEOPLE SHOT:

Caring For The People Who Care

In one 24-hour period in Indianapolis last month, 14 people were shot, and some were killed. One of them was Martavius Gray. Later that week when 2CI's Jim Cotterill met virtually with a group that prays for our city every Wednesday morning, one of the members, Anthony Beverly of Stop the Violence Indianapolis, was too choked up to pray and began to weep. He had mentored Martavius, and had been involved with a plan for Martavius to leave town on Monday for a safer place. But Monday was one day too late.

So the next week, the prayer warriors left their offices and surrounded Anthony Beverly in prayer, love, and gratitude for his amazing work. We are so sorry for the loss of Martavius and all those who suffered violence on that night and any other.

WATCH RECIDIVISIM NUMBERS DROP!

New Data Focuses On Reentrants Who Ride Vans To Work

Data drives the decisions made at 2nd Chance Indiana. Now, our first available data points show actual recidivism for those who have had rides to and from work through the 2CI Van Program, that removes the No.1 barrier to getting and keeping a good job. Check out the red type: Out of 34 riders, 89% have not reoffended...out of 29 riders, 90% have not reoffended, and there is more to come. With the help of Martin Lammers, a retired Microsoft exec, we are developing data that can follow employee raises and promotions, in an aggregated form, so 2CI can integrate reentrant services that will support the more than 12,000 people with a criminal record who are released into Indiana each year. Van transportation works!

THERE’S NO HARD NO

Nubian Construction Group Talks Turkey

A trio of 2nd Chance Indiana folks met recently with the founders of Nubian Construction Group to talk about hiring reentrants. Nubian is a construction management and tri-axle trucking company that serves both public and private businesses throughout the state.

Scott, Tyler and Kendra met with Deborah Oatts and Nadina Edwards who are open to hiring reentrants, and said, there is no "Hard No" against people with a background. Their main job opportunities are for dump truck drivers (with a commercial drivers license, a CDL) where pay rates may be as high as $55 an hour. While Nubian has a full complement of drivers right now, there may be other jobs available that relate to the management/consulting part of their business. Also, they may be able to connect job seekers with their clients who may need to hire for general labor or construction skilled positions. Our thanks to Nubian!!

RIDES TO WORK?

Goodwill Of Michiana To Help South Bend Community Corrections?

Goodwill is great at helping people get back on their feet after incarceration. They offer training and help with other barriers that hold reentrants back after release. One of the services they'd like to explore is the use of 2nd Chance Indiana van transportation from the South Bend Community Corrections facility to the job sites for reentrants. Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc. and South Bend Community Corrections are working out the details as 2nd Chance Indiana awaits the opportunity to help more people with rides to and from work at the most crucial point of their reentry and employment process. EQUIPPING JOB SEEKERS:

Community Corrections Increases Job Readiness With 2nd Chance Indiana Courses

A work release facility is a first step in reentry that allows individuals to have the support of a place to live, with oversight and training as it serves as an off-ramp from incarceration. This July, a new service to IDOC will be provided by 2nd Chance Indiana that brings its Career Path Workshop to the men who live in the 350-bed Duvall Residential Center. The men will be trained in all the basics of completing job applications, developing a resume, and crafting a “30-second elevator speech” to help them describe their talents and overcome the difficulty of explaining past issues. They will go through a series of career assessment questionnaires to determine where their interests and talents lie, and mentors will be available for those who don’t have the needed support during reentry. Jobs are available on 2ndChanceIn.com, and with this training, most will succeed.

Watch For 2nd Chance Indiana's FaceBook Posts & More!

When Stephanie Emrie joined the cast of players at 2nd Chance Indiana, her job was to work on coordinating transportation for reentrants who require a ride to and from work. But soon she was taking on the task of communicating with the Facebook audience as well. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, approximately 200,000 men and 60,000 women are released from Indiana's prisons and jails each year. The work we do changes the trajectory of lives and makes Indiana a stronger and safer place to live. So, watch for 2nd Chance Indiana news on FaceBook to learn what’s going on in the reentry job training and job acquisition effort here in Indiana! INDY AND COUNTY JOBS FOR REENTRANTS:

Still, Lots of Good Employees Needed!

The City of Indianapolis and Marion County held a hiring event on June 11th. Yes, the date has passed, but there are still jobs! According to the Human Resource department, there are lots of jobs for folks in reentry. Says Rhonda in HR, “the Department of Public Works is always looking for good employees, as well as jobs in the animal care services and Indy Parks." You can check their website at my.indy.gov/jobs for more information!

Why Support 2nd Chance Indiana?

2nd Chance Indiana's team works to reduce recidivism and rebuild lives through the dignity of work. In the process we believe that our efforts can also have a profound, multi-generational impact by reducing poverty, crime, and homelessness.

Our major focus is to assist the thousands of inmates returning to communities across Indiana after long-term incarceration. 2nd Chance Indiana provides mentored job training inside the correctional facility, and a jobs website for those with a criminal record, 2ndChanceIN.com, which is filled with job opportunities and support agencies to help reentrants get back to work, support themselves and their families, and contribute to the economic improvement of their neighborhoods.

How You Can Support Jobs for Justice- Involved Individuals

Support For Reentrants After Incarcertion:
Since 2017 UNITE INDY, now 2nd Chance Indiana, has provided a free web-based system, 2ndChanceIN.com, that connects those released from incarceration with jobs offered by our 45 employer partners, willing to hire people with a criminal record and pay them a living wage.
The site also offers a huge network of support organizations that can help with housing, drug abatement, licensing, clothing and so much more.

A good job found quickly after release from incarceration can drive down recidivism about 90%, according to studies. Unemployment is connected to poverty, a criminal record, and re-incarceration. Our poorest neighborhoods contain many who have not been able to get good jobs because they have a criminal record, but 2nd Chance Indiana not only connects them with jobs, it also provides van transportation to many sites to help those who do not have affordable or reliable transportation. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment is extremely high and poverty remains the overwhelming cause of violence—as well as lack of opportunity for children.

You can help us to help a reentrant today, Here! To know more, go to 2nd Chance Indiana now. There are a number of choices that are all secure and safe. By sending your tax deductible gift* now we can have a greater impact meeting needs in our community.
Many, many thanks!
