Enrolling Now | Open Enrollment Virtual Training

While research and clinical experience indicate a high incidence of trauma and co-occurring disorders in women’s lives, counselors and clinicians often struggle with the realities of providing treatment. This 4-day virtual training is based on the evidence-based treatment curriculum, Beyond Trauma: A Healing Journey for Women. This twelve-session intervention is designed for use in outpatient, residential, and criminal justice settings. It can be adapted for use with girls.

The curriculum has a psycho-educational component that teaches women what trauma is, its process, and its impact on both the inner self (thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values) and the outer self (behavior and relationships, including parenting).

This 4 day (4.5 hours per day) virtual training presents the new second addition of this innovative treatment program, Helping Men Recover: A Program for Treating Addiction. The presenter has developed, with Dr. Stephanie Covington and Dan Griffin, the first gender-responsive and trauma-informed treatment curriculum for men.

The Helping Men Recover curriculum addresses what is often missing in prevailing treatment modes: a clear understanding of the impact of male socialization on the recovery process, a consideration of the relational needs of men, and a focus on the issues of abuse and trauma.

The newly released Helping Men Recover (2nd edition) is a gender-based, trauma-informed treatment program for substance use disorders that has been expanded to twenty-one sessions. It is grounded in research, theory, and clinical practice and includes a facilitator’s guide and a participant’s workbook.

The Helping Men Recover Facilitator’s Guide is a step-by-step manual containing the theory, structure, and content needed for running the twenty-one groups. The program model is organized into four modules that emphasize the core areas of men’s recovery: self, relationships, sexuality, and spirituality.

A Man's Workbook offers a companion product that is tied seamlessly to the Helping Men Recover Facilitator's Guide. The participant’s workbook allows men to process and record the therapeutic experience.

This version of Helping Men Recover addresses the special concerns and issues of men with substance-use disorders who are in correctional settings. The facilitator’s guide has specific information on men in the criminal justice system, as well as special tips on program facilitation in this venue. These materials are used in jails, prisons, drug courts, and community correctional settings.

A Day in the Life of Dr. Covington: Training at The College of St. Scholastica

Last month at The College of St. Scholastica, Dr. Covington held her training seminar, Gender, Trauma and Addiction: Addressing the Needs of young People.

This event introduced social providers and graduate students to comprehensive, integrated, and gender-responsive trauma and addiction programs. The goal was to encourage the development of services that help young men and women, nonbinary and other gender diverse youth recover from the effects of trauma and addiction.

Dr. Covington focused on three primary topics: 1) the world youth are growing up in, 2) the connection between trauma, addiction, and mental health issues, and 3) the importance of understanding gender differences and gender diversity.
