A Day in the Life of Mundi, Tarra, and Bo

Imagine a day in the lives of Bo, Tarra, and Mundi where every moment is a testament to their autonomy and freedom in their own version of paradise. Having free access to a cozy barn and 850 acres of lush, open land, they have the liberty to do what they want, when they want, and go wherever their hearts desire. Whether they choose to nap under the sun, splash joyfully in the pond or lake, explore shady forests or wide-open pastures and graze carefree, or engage in play with their canine companions, Samie and Mala, their choices are driven by their whims and desires.

Mundi Embraces the Day While Bo Sleeps In

The caring staff, attuned to each elephant’s body language and needs, ensures Bo, Tarra, and Mundi’s physical and emotional well-being is always the top priority. Their food and supplements arrive three times a day by 4-wheeler delivery, no matter where they roam on the refuge---respecting their freedom to wander throughout the vast habitat. Some days their caregivers may provide pedicures to maintain healthy nailbeds, or cold laser therapy for their joints, keeping them in peak condition.

Tarra's Dinner Delivery & Laser Therapy

One recent afternoon the ATV was loaded with food supplements but all three elephants were nowhere to be found. Then, a glimpse of Mundi’s floppy ears as she vanished into thick tree cover near the new pond, well hidden from sight. The winding grass trail leading to the pond is sheltered by a canopy of giant oaks with dense elephant-eye-high bushes and clinging vines. It is like entering a magical forest. The trail sloops down into a secluded clearing encircled by a forest of mature trees and plush knee-high grass that creates a carpet from the forest to the water’s edge. Our newest pond, underwritten by our friends Stephanie and Drake Kennedy, shimmers invitingly. At the far side stands Bo, looking stunningly regal in his newly applied coat of sticky mud bug repellant. Just then Mundi comes crashing out of the thick brush, ears flapping, tail raised, in her over-the-top excited fashion, not about the ATV, but because she just found Bo, again!

Mundi Delights in Finding Bo Every Time!

Every day is a celebration of Bo, Tarra, and Mundi’s independence and joy, enriched by the deep bonds that they share with each other, their caregivers, and the many devoted followers who support them from afar.

Support the Elephants: A Year of Care for Mundi, Tarra, and Bo

Did you know that it costs $145,000 to care for just one of our beloved elephants for a year? This covers everything from food and supplements to veterinary care and daily deliveries of love and attention. We're asking for your help to ensure that Mundi, Tarra, and Bo have everything they need to thrive.

Thanks to the incredible outpouring of love from those who have known Mundi for 35 years and those who have followed her rescue from afar, we exceeded our goal for her first Year of Care. We are now launching a campaign for her second year and creating campaigns for Bo and Tarra as well.

You can choose to support one of these amazing elephants or all three. Your donation makes a significant impact:

  • $25 provides a day's worth of supplements for one elephant.
  • $200 provides food for a week for one elephant.
  • $500 supports health care for a month for one elephant.

Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference. Additionally, you can make a monthly recurring donation to provide continuous support throughout the year.

Artist with a Heart for Elephants

Martiza in Action: Bringing a Cement Elephant to Life!

Maritza Curet from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico–the talented artist who creates the popular hand-painted stones featuring Mundi, Tarra, and Bo–has an exciting new project for EAI: painted cement elephants!

What motivates Maritza to donate her talents to EAI? We interviewed her and her husband Alberto who also volunteers for EAI.

When and how did you get involved with helping elephants?

Maritza: “It started with Mundi in 2016 when the allegations and complaints came out about the negligence, killing of totally healthy animals, serious economic problems, and the delicate situation of another 798 animals in the abandoned Puerto Rico Zoo.”

Alberto: “It started with Mundi as I became conscious about all the suffering the animals were having from the neglect, limitations, and flaws happening at the Mayaguez Zoo. The Puerto Rican Government was in bankruptcy since 2015 and Hurricane María in 2017 only made things worse. So, there was not even a small glimpse of hope in my mind that money and resources were going to be channeled to the facility to assist the animals at the Zoo. Maritza shared with me all the Federal reports, and all the information collected about Mundi (and the other animals at the zoo) that was shared by the local activists, so that made me assist with the effort to help and rescue the animals at the zoo.”

What changes have you witnessed in Mundi via the EAI EleCam compared to how Mundi was at the zoo?

Maritza: “[At the zoo] Mundi’s loneliness was evident, and she was in a small area surrounded by a pit. She was seeking everyone's attention in an area that had no shade, and no trees. The change Mundi has demonstrated at the Refuge has been incredible. From loneliness to the company of Bo and Tarra. From lack of space to a whole forest. From boredom staring at an old car tire, to interacting with Samie and Mala, and a whole variety of wildlife. From a black water pond (or most of the time, an empty one), to a beautiful lake that supports nature. From having severely deficient veterinary care to having the utmost attention not only to their physical health but to their mental health. From being beaten by a bullhook to receiving the touch of a friendly and compassionate hand. For all of this, I thank EAI, because through their EleCam we have all been able to witness this radical change.”

Alberto: “Everything has changed, it is a marvelous opportunity watching Mundi at the refuge via the EleCam. There are no words to express how happy I am watching Mundi freely explore all the acreage, playing with Bo, Tarra, and the dogs, taking mud baths or just strolling around enjoying the lake and the trees. I am happy that all the efforts made resulted in Mundi enjoying her time. Thanks to Carol and EAI!”

What motivates you to work for the elephants and EAI?

Maritza: “From the beginning, to inform others about Mundi’s condition and the other animals through social media, to being an active part in the creation and participation of an excellent and hard-working team that managed to create public opinion and draw attention to a taboo subject in PR (animal liberation), I learned about Carol Buckley's story. Learning how she carried out the largest elephant rescue in the United States was amazing.

Among the events and strategies to find a solution to transfer Mundi to Carol Buckey's new refuge, I created what would become La Piedrita de Mundi (Mundi's Little Stone). Using art to make our claims known, Mundi being the symbol of our battle, was one of the most wonderful ideas that not only helped to raise empathy about the relocation but was also therapy for me full of positive vibes. They were painted and simply left in every public place I visited. People could keep the stone as a conversation piece for their family or leave it for others to find. The hashtag #freemundi was included on the stones so everyone could find the necessary information.

In the final days of Mundi's transfer and in the midst of the physical attacks on her, I started to paint a stone. I sent the picture to Carol, who was alone and watching over Mundi in the darkness of the closed zoo. Carol loved it. I promised to send her one and if the feeling of holding it in her hand, feeling its texture and what it represented made her feel good, I would take it upon myself to create more to help the refuge's efforts. I thank Carol Buckley for her trust, for being a helping and compassionate hand to Mundi, Bo, and dear Tarra.”

Alberto: “Just knowing that Mundi now lives with other elephants in a natural place as close to her original habitat as possible is a good motivation to continue helping Mundi and the EAI refuge.”

How many painted stones have you sold so far for EAI?

Maritza: “I have painted 8 editions of stones and thanks to the love, kindness, and generosity of EAI’s supporters, approximately 180 stones have been sold. To all of them, I thank you infinitely for the support you give to Mundi, Bo, and Tarra. 100% of the donation goes to support EAI.”

What can you tell us about the new art project you are working on—the painted cement elephants?

Maritza: “The new project is using not only natural rocks, but cement as a canvas to create images of Mundi, Bo, and Tarra at the Refuge. In this new edition, I try to symbolize that the Healing does not follow a straight line; it is a path of twists and turns in the lives of both humans and our beloved elephants. Natural painted stones can be displayed inside your home. The cement elephants can decorate your patio or garden and give a special touch of Bo, Mundi, and Tarra style from Elephant Aid International.”

Hand-Painted Cement Elephants and Stones

We are excited to present the Ninth Edition of our Painted Stones series, themed "Healing is Not Linear." This series captures the essence of healing, reflecting its winding and unpredictable nature.

We also introduce the first series of Painted Cement Elephants: "Bo, Mundi, and Tarra Garden Pearls." Representing the elephants as guardians of petals, colors, and light, they stand united, steadfast, and bright. These unique pieces also double as eyeglass holders, blending functionality with artistic beauty.
