Delaware isn’t alone in navigating a period of rapid transformation. Drawing from insights in the State Chamber’s recent white paper, The Trends Shaping Delaware’s Future, Kelly is joined by Chip Rossi, recently retired from Bank of America, and Rodger Levenson of WSFS Bank to discuss how these shifts are impacting Delaware’s economy.

DELAWARE: A DEMOGRAPHIC SNAPSHOT

Delaware's population has grown by nearly 21% between 2006 and 2023, largely driven by an aging demographic. The population of residents aged 65 and older has surged by 92%, while growth among prime working-age individuals has been modest at best. While the state benefits from positive domestic and international migration, workforce challenges persist. Read more >

Less than a quarter of Delaware households have a child in it. The total number of Delaware households with at least one child under 18 decreased by 1.3% from 2006 to 2022. During the same period, the percentage of such households declined from 30.0% of all households in 2006 to 23.6% in 2022. This trend is reflected in our neighboring states as well.

Delaware’s labor force has grown by approximately 60,000 over the past 18 years but has seen minimal growth in recent years. A significant portion of this growth has come from older workers. Between 2006 and 2024, the number of workers aged 65 and older in Delaware increased from 17,412 to 37,653—a 116% increase.

Another factor influencing Delaware's labor force growth is the decline in labor force participation rates. Between 2019 and October 2024, Delaware's participation rate dropped by three percentage points, from 62.27% in 2019 to 59.17% in October 2024.

LABOR FORCE PARTICIPATION RATE

FAST FACT: Delaware has the lowest labor force participation rate among its neighboring states. Delaware’s labor force participation rate stands at 59.1%. By comparison, Virginia leads the region at 66.4%, followed closely by Maryland at 65.7% and New Jersey at 63.7%. The national rate is 62.9%, while Pennsylvania comes in at 61.7%. Read more >

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I’m presently in Kansas City attending the National Association of Chambers of Commerce Annual Meeting, and one of the benefits of doing so is learning about the successes of other state chambers. A good example is the work the Colorado Chamber did to cut duplicative and burdensome regulations.

The team in Denver brought on the help of two university consultants, ironically from Salisbury University in Maryland, to identify layers of executive orders and regulations that had accumulated over decades and created inefficiencies in state government as well as substantial costs to businesses of all sizes.
