A Walk Through History: Foundations to 1930
As the City of Bryan gets closer to the official 150th anniversary of incorporation, we continue to add more information to the celebration's website. An interactive, media-rich timeline of the first half of Bryan's history is now available. You can read a narrative history and explore important points in time, view photos and artifacts, watch videos, listen to interviews and oral histories and more. This first half of the timeline tells Bryan's story from a time before there was a "Bryan" up to 1930. The second half of the timeline, from 1931 to today, will launch in September.
One more opportunity to give Fire Department input
Bryan residents have another opportunity to help shape the future of the Bryan Fire Department. This strategic planning public input session will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, at Hope's Crossing, 1400 Martin Luther King, Jr. St. The event will include a presentation from Fire Chief Rich Giusti, time to ask questions and a survey.

Back-to-School Skate Jam is Friday
Grab your skateboards and bikes and head to WIlliamson Skate Park on Friday, Aug. 13 for the first annual Back-to-School Skate Jam! The event will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and includes prizes, music, free pizza and drinks. This is a free event for the public and no registration is required.

FY2022 budget planning process underway
City of Bryan staff members and elected officials are hard at work on the FY2022 Proposed Budget, which ensures city services are maintained while continuing good stewardship of taxpayer dollars. The public hearing on the FY2022 Proposed Budget is on Aug. 24. Look for details on how to participate in the public hearing as the date comes closer.

Mayor Nelson honored by Texas Public Power Association
Bryan Mayor Andrew Nelson was recently awarded the 2021 Public Service Leadership Award from the Texas Public Power Association for his commitment to the community's electricity needs. TPPA’s Public Service Leadership Award is presented annually to elected officials who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their constituents and the State of Texas.

Make your mark: Apply for boards & commissions
Looking for a great way to get involved? Consider applying to be appointed to one of Bryan's volunteer boards and commissions. No experience necessary! Each fall, the Bryan City Council reviews applications and appoints new members to help oversee things like parks, cemeteries, planning and zoning, the library and more. Applications are due Sept. 17, 2021.

Bryan Police Department launches mental health unit
In an effort to meet the community's needs, the Bryan Police Department formed a Mental Health Unit in April 2021. Since its inception the unit has worked with local mental health authorities to divert people in mental health crises from jails to behavioral treatment facilities.

Teen Court, Youth Advisory Commission seeking volunteers
Two programs that serve youth in Bryan are looking for volunteers for the 2021-2022 school year. High school students in Bryan ISD who are interested in getting involved can participate as attorneys and jurors in the City of Bryan Teen Court; and teens 13-18 in Bryan can volunteer to be part of the Youth Advisory Commission.

Smoke testing begins in central Bryan this week
Residents in central areas of Bryan may see smoke emanating from various areas beginning Aug. 13, as contractors with the City of Bryan perform smoke testing on sanitary sewer lines.

The smoke testing helps identify broken pipes and other defects by having field crews inject smoke into the sewer lines through manholes.

Teen Court, Youth Advisory Commission seeking volunteers
There are only a few more days to add a name to the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial Wall of Honor this year. The cost is $150 per name to cover the engraving and maintenance. Names added by Aug. 15 will be recognized during the annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m. Names received after Aug. 15 will be recognized the following year.

Bryan High School football team 1919.
Before the lights on Friday night: High school football in Texas. It's a tradition that goes back more than 100 years and is unlike any other in the nation. This photo shows the 1919 Bryan High School football team. In 1922, the Bryan High team, coached by C. B. Hudson, won the first ever University Scholastic League (UIL) state football championship.
