At 97 years old, Tom Stanley spent nearly a lifetime walking alongside those facing adversity.
Born and raised on a farm, Tom’s early life was rooted in hard work and community. After marrying, he and his wife, Marion, took over the family farm, where they lived and worked together for 20 years. It was during this time, as a farmer, that Tom first connected with what would become Alongside Hope.
Following the mining disaster in Springhill, Nova Scotia in 1958, a response from Anglicans across Canada eventually led to the creation of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, now known as Alongside Hope. Moved by the need, Tom encouraged his parish to extend their giving beyond their own community, ensuring that support reached those who needed it most.
“If you have the resources,” says Tom, “it’s a good feeling knowing your wishes are being carried out.”
