You are a First Gen to College with a Master's and PhD. What is your personal story?
I am a first generation high school student, college undergraduate student, Masters and PhD student. Unfortunately, I am still the only person in my immediate family to get a college education.
I grew up in the inner city of Cleveland Ohio, surrounded by violence; and the fact that I was first generation actually helped to save my life. I was accepted into the Upward Bound Trio program when I was in high school. Having the opportunity to see a different way of life rather than the life directly in my reach gave me hope that there was another part of this life that I could experience.
You work at Kent State to help students and First Gen be successful. What is your guidance to them right now, as so many are reading these newsletters virtually because of Covid-19?
Things have moved so quickly with Covid-19, the university has restricted secondary messages going out to the students. I'm sure that is because of the severity of the issues. However, we have an amazing staff in our Student Affairs division and in our Diversity Equality and Inclusion division, so student needs are being taken care of. Every week, I produce videos of encouragement for First Gen people called "First Generation Fridays". These videos give knowledge and challenge a new way of thinking for the First Gen community. You recently started your own efforts to advance opportunities for First Gen. Tell us about your vision and goals.
Research shows that first generation students still have a difficult time transitioning from college into their respective careers. The support system stops once they graduate from college and many of them can't depend on family to give them the info they need to go into their careers. Another major issue is that first generation students tend to make less money than their peers. According to the EAB, first generation students (men and women) earn approximately 10% less per year than their peers. My goal with the 1st Generation Revolutionaries Movement is to bridge that gap with professional development aimed at transition techniques and gainful success post-graduation.
How can the GlobalMindED community help you to advance your goals and how can we help Kent State to be a more inclusive environment where First Gen and students of all backgrounds can thrive during college and in their future careers?
At Kent State University, most of our programming and support is for undergraduate students. Hence the importance of the First Generation Affinity group for graduate students, which I've just launched. There is a huge need there on every campus.
The suggestion you made to identity those faculty/staff on campus who are First Gen and feature them on a website for First Gen incoming students is an amazing idea. Students need to be able to see and have a clear picture of who their support is coming from and who their role models are. KSU has an LGBTQ+ Ally program where we publicly feature individuals on campus who are allies that students can talk to when needed. KSU needs one for people who are First Gen!
I'd like to work with you to develop program specific events for graduate students who are first generation and for suggestions on how we can develop a first gen directory as this would be so helpful to our students. We look forward to achieving these goals with you and the GlobalMindED network now and in the years to come.

Your support also helps teachers who can't afford the conference fees, faculty at colleges which are under resourced and students who persist at those universities despite food insecurity and/or housing insecurity.

The ILO Skills Challenge Innovation Call will recognise and support the development of solutions that aim to address the different forms and dimensions of skills mismatch.

Entertainment For Change creates original song and dance (#SDGGROOVE) to educate young people on the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Like any meaningful social change, the original song and dance is a collaborative effort between more than 20 singers, dancers, writers and choreographers. Lauded vocalists Natalie Weiss and Antonio Cipriano lend their voices to the powerful lyrics, while each SDG is danced by performers of all calibers.

Join the #NeedHerScience Campaign that is aimed at addressing journal-level gender bias. For decades, studies have demonstrated gender bias in publishing. This may occur at various stages in the process, including at the level of the
journals. The equitable inclusion of women editors at every level is long overdue. Addressing journal gender bias starts at the top.
The goal: To raise awareness about gender bias in publishing and share with stakeholders, including journal editors and owners, the overall number of scientists, healthcare professionals and others who have taken the pledge. The pledge can be taken anonymously. Educators and others are encouraged to take the pledge and share information about this issue with colleagues and trainees.
