Tau brother Gordon McNutt '62 passed away on Tuesday, May 24, after a long battle with multiple myeloma and complications from congestive heart failure.
A fourth-generation Austinite, he attended Colorado College after graduating from Austin High in 1962, where he pledged Kappa Sigma. He returned to Austin, joined Tau Chapter and earned a business degree from UT Austin. He then headed to Chicago, earning a Master’s in Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
He had a successful banking and real estate career that took him to Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Houston before returning to Austin.
He continued his banking career in Austin and began his next professional venture, real estate investing and financing.
"Gordon was most assuredly in my top five of the greatest guys I have known in this life," said Milton Allen. "He was funny, an intellect of the highest order, loved his family, was successful in business, courageous in the face of his illness, and a great friend to me for some 35 or 40 years. My friend, Gordon, I hope to see you somewhere on the other side."
Reggie Tuck '69 said Gordon reminded him of Jimmy Stewart in his speech and mannerisms, with a "twinkle in his eye that signified a bit of mischief."
"Gordon was a class act with a quick wit, great smile and laugh," Reggie said. "He loved his family, Kappa Sigma, the Horns, and Lake Austin. He was very successful in business and fought like hell to whip cancer. Rest In Peace, Gordo!"
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn (“Kay”) Martin McNutt, of Austin; his son, Russell Edward McNutt (fiancé, Emmy Bateman) of Lake Charles; and his daughter, Louise McNutt Brazitis (husband, Matt) of Austin.
