James "Ernie" Taliaferro

October 19, 1957 - July 26, 2025

Tau Chapter lost a beloved friend and invaluable asset last week when longtime House Director Ernie Taliaferro passed away following a lengthy illness.

Widely regarded as the dean of property managers, Ernie had been overseeing fraternity houses at The University of Texas since the 1980s, most notably for the Kappa Alphas; and since 2010, for Tau Chapter of Kappa Sigma.

Ernie served not only as a dependable property manager, but also as a trusted advisor to the Tau Trustees and a mentor to both active members and alumni officers, providing a steadying hand as the Chapter grew larger and new facilities were constructed. His positive impact on the Chapter and broader community was immense.

Ernie earned the respect of University officials, city leaders, law enforcement, entertainers, and the countless vendors essential to running a modern fraternity. He handled every challenge with grace, good humor, a steady hand — and always with a smile.

Former Tau Trustee Chairman Bill Zwiener '73 sent a note to Ernie shortly before his passing stating in part "Ernie, Thank you for the impact you've had on our lives. You've been our mentor throughout the years, an incredible liaison between the Chapter and Board, Tau Trustees and Alumni. We are grateful for your friendship and we will always hold you in our hearts."

Ernie leaves behind a legacy of integrity, loyalty, warm friendships and an unwavering commitment to excellence. He set a high standard for all who follow, and his presence will be deeply missed.

Ernie was also known for his love of dogs, and every dog lucky enough to live in the Kappa Sig House found their way to Ernie's office to enjoy his warm affection and, of course, the jar of treats he kept at the ready.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years and partner-in-life-and-laughs, Donna Taliaferro; his daughter, the extraordinarily talented Elizabeth Freedom Taliaferro; and his younger siblings Deana Giles and Allen Taliaferro.

We will celebrate Ernie's life this Friday, August 1, at 2 PM, at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel, 393 North I‑35, in Georgetown, TX. Please join us for a remembrance filled with laughter, tears, and stories, especially those outrageous tales he loved. All are welcome.
