Tau brother Joe Howell '61 passed away on May 23 after suffering a heart attack a few days earlier.
Joe, known as "Sweet Pea" to Kappa Sigs, remained close to his Tau brothers throughout his life, especially Monk White '61, D. Stone Davis '61, James Elliot '62, and David Bell '63.
"Mr. Sweet Pea was as good a friend as I've ever had," said Monk White '60. "He was my college roommate, groomsman at my first wedding, and long-time business partner in many ventures! Pea was loyal beyond belief and always put our friendship first. He will be deeply missed."
"Joe was indeed a sweet person, perhaps too innocent for this mean, old world," said Doug McLeod '61.
A real estate developer who participated in projects throughout the world, one of his most notable projects was the CandleRidge neighborhood development in Fort Worth.
Joe Longley '61 said Sweet Pea often stayed at his home when he was in Austin for Kappa Sig events. "My wife, Maggie, always commented on his perfect posture and kind demeanor, followed by a tongue-in-cheek aside, "Are you sure he's a Kappa Sig?"
Stone Davis remembers Joe "always allowing his Tau brothers to participate in his next great adventure, deal or project -- risk unknown!"
He is survived by his son, Sharber Howell, his daughter, Perry Sharman, and his brother, Larry "Green Bean" Howell '64.
A gathering to celebrate his life will be held in Forth Worth in August. More information to follow soon.
A special thanks to David Bell '63 for reaching out to his Tau brothers to gather fond memories of Sweet Pea.
