I am proud to be an American and let me tell you why...
I am proud to be an American and here is why....

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, we at IHNA have worked side by side with the employees of our local BB&T Bank to spruce up the exterior of the Day Center.

Richard Carswell, BB&T's Market President and one of IHNA's board members, encouraged IHNA to apply for the annual BB&T Lighthouse Project which provides corporate financial support and employee volunteer hours. IHNA was fortunate to be chosen as the 2016 Lighthouse Project recipient.

Also joining BB&T employees and IHNA staff and board members on Wednesday was the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Service Teens in Service day camp. They brought ten campers and two counselors to assist in this project. We painted, spread mulch, trimmed bushes, pressure-washed siding and playground equipment, planted annuals and roses, created container gardens, and replaced a rotting back porch.

I encourage you to drive by the Day Center at 393 West Hancock Avenue and see the results. They are transformation. One of our current guests told me that the building went from being grubby to shinny and happy. Another told me that the changes to our building made them proud.

These volunteers and BB&T's financial contribution make our Day Center warm and inviting. They purchased new porch furniture and I hope it helps us live up to the word "hospitality" that is in our name. I would love to envision a day when you would stop by for a visit and we could offer you a glass of lemonade, and then we could all sit on the front porch for a few minutes in conversation.

While our political parties fight, we are uniting to make a difference not only in the lives of our guests but also in the lives of our volunteers.

I wish each of you the very best Fourth of July. As we celebrate, the birth of our great nation, I hope you are proud of the partnership that serves those in need.
