Outdoors All Summer

Our Conservation Youth Crews are working hard on Nature Trust properties across BC. Every summer, The Nature Trust of BC hires post-secondary students to tackle a variety of projects from restoring wetlands, to monitoring wildlife, while learning valuable skills for future employment.  The crews are trained in First Aid, Bear Aware, and the safe handling of power tools. They also attend workshops by specialists on topics such as bird counts and forest and wetland ecology. This is a great way for them to gain hands-on experience. Many of them go on to careers in conservation. If you would like to support these conservation leaders of the future, donate here

Dr. Sarah Otto Takes the Chair

Welcome to Dr. Sarah Otto as the new Chair of The Nature Trust of BC Board of Directors. As an acclaimed evolutionary geneticist, she brings her perspective as a scientist and her commitment to conservation to her new role. “I think it would be fantastic if, throughout the province, we all took pride in working together through The Nature Trust of BC, to protect land around where we live, work, and play so that future generations can also enjoy BC’s amazing natural landscapes,” says Dr. Otto. She is a professor in the Department of Zoology and Biodiversity Research Centre at the University of British Columbia. She has been honoured with numerous awards including the MacArthur Fellowship – commonly known as the genius grant.

Welcome to a New Team Member

We would like to welcome Jason Emery to the new role as Director of Conservation Land Management. He will be working with our regional Conservation Land Managers identifying innovative stewardship opportunities and landscape-scale approaches to conservation on Nature Trust lands across the province. He will be implementing habitat restoration projects with the goals of both maintaining and increasing ecosystem resiliency on the land base. Jason is joining us from BCIT, where he has been helping train the next generation of conservation professionals in the Ecological Restoration Program and the Fish and Wildlife Program. Prior to that, he spent many years working in the environmental consulting sector as a wildlife scientist. Jason studied at SFU, BCIT, and Royal Roads University where he earned a Master’s Degree.
