Dear Friends,

This week, as an institution grounded in Torah, we are honored despite our tears to reflect on the passing of one of the true giants in our world of Torah.

In 1996 the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, an institution we at FJC admire, asked me to compose music in celebration of its 25th Anniversary. I suggested a rock and roll song cycle inspired by the talmudic story of the four rabbis who entered the Pardes, and that's what we did. It was called "Four Entered."

My eternal reward as I prepared the project was studying for 3 months with R. Arye Strakovski, z"l, who died this week, in what can only be described as an otherworldly experience of music, text, and the singing of the spheres.

Reb Arye possessed one of the most illuminated, literate, and open minds I have ever encountered. He never opened a book in sessions that lasted for hours — reciting all texts by heart, never flinching from a wild idea, never losing patience with my lack of knowledge, and always encouraging more, more, more.

He was simply a profoundly gifted and kind man, a true talmid chacham, and opened the gates and mysteries of possibility of Torah in ways from which I am still learning more than 25 years later.

יהי זכרו ברוך — May his memory be for a blessing.

Your students weep for you in both sorrow and gratitude, Reb Arye. May we be worthy in some small way, anyway, to carry your learning forward.

Shabbat Shalom,
Dr. Stephen Arnoff
