SOME SECRETS REFUSE TO BE BURIED

I often wondered how Eliana might have hidden her writings in the first century. Ancient Judea was far from safe after the death of Christ. Early followers of the Church struggled to find refuge, and for Eliana, entrusting her work to loyal friends and kin became the only path forward.

Her journey carried those fragile scrolls along spice caravan routes from Egypt to the rose-red city of Petra, and across harsh seas and rugged lands all the way to Din Eidyn—what we now know as Edinburgh.

With more major museums per square mile in New York and Paris today, it felt natural to weave her story into the art world. Through deserts and distant shores, Eliana's story unfolds as more than history—it is a passage between worlds, where faith, hope, and survival intertwine.

A hiding place, a secret. And so the story of the Gospel of Eliana begins.

Bonus Dive:

The Silent Codes of Art

Just as Eliana's truth is hidden in scrolls, artists across the centuries have woven secret codes, hidden symbols, and layered meanings into their work. Sometimes personal—encoding fragments of their own lives—while at other times they were political, disguising critiques of the powers of their day.

Two famous examples - Da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Van Gogh's Cafe by the Terrace.

In Chapter 2 of The Gospel of Eliana, such symbols take center stage. It’s fascinating to imagine how ancient secrets could echo forward into the details of these masterpieces.

Can you guess what hidden messages lie within them?

Tools to Keep the Writing Flowing

Lately, I follow fellow writer Diane Gabaldon's schedule and work from midnight onwards. It's the best writing time when the world is quiet, and you have time to think about plots, characters, and their motives, and the often complex art of crafting dialogue that sounds authentic.

I listen to these artists endlessly while working. I am currently obsessed with R&B & jazz artists Raye and Olivia Dean. When the going gets tough, I dance at 3 am to the tune of Dean's Ladies Room Live in New York and Raye's Work it.

Lola Amour's The Album Concert remains a favorite to this day. Music critics struggle to categorize their genre, often labeling it as modern rock, funk, or pop, with influences from alternative rock, pop rock, and jazz fusion. It's all of the above and some more!

And speaking of writing tools, this one is quite effective. As a New York Times article suggests, Japanese walking offers greater advantages than a simple stroll or even walking at a moderate pace for 8,000 or more steps a day. I walk every day, and it oxygenates my brain. And leads to excellent writing!

Last, but not least, I'm sharing a great brownie recipe from Love & Lemons, perfect for those midnight fridge raids. And whether it's for midnight writing or midnight sustenance, all is good.

It's the last quarter of the year, and I wish you all the best as we rush towards the holiday season.

Thank you for joining me in this journey through history and imagination. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Keep safe!

With gratitude,

Mayet
