While sitting on the patio enjoying my morning tea, I noticed brown blotches and rolled leaves on the lilac bush. As I made a mental note to look into the problem and what I might do to fix it, I observed several small birds doing some amazing acrobatics in that same bush. Curious, I watched their movements and realized that they were trying to unroll the leaves. Which led me to wonder if there was something tasty (for a bird) inside.
A closer look revealed an insect, and a quick internet search taught me that there is a moth that likes to pupate in the lilac…and its larvae are highly favored by small birds. This natural process will not harm my bush. Help is not needed. So, while the inhabitants do make the leaves a bit unsightly, I let things be. I decided instead to enjoy the birds.
As I further pondered the birds, the bugs, and the bush, I was filled with wonder at the web of life: sun and soil which nurture the bush which feeds the bug which in turn feeds the bird! Through them, I can see a God that knows our needs and lovingly cares for all creation.
The moment also led me to wonder what situations in my life may be calling me to be present but not necessarily calling me to action.
I am reminded to slow down. Pay attention. Be curious. Be open. Reflect. And trust that even in situations which I judge as less than perfect, there is good. God is at work.
