A Message from Rabbi Wexler

The Book of Deuteronomy is more auditory than visual. The Hebrew name of the book, Devarim, can be translated as “words” or “sayings.” Moses delivers poetry and memoir; encouragement and criticism. Not originally a confident public speaker, now Moses offers a masterful verbal performance as nearly the entire book is comprised of a speech he gives to b’nai Yisrael. He uses every tool he can to get the people to listen, now and in the future. For most of the book, he is literally a lone voice in the wilderness.

The Hebrew root “Shema.” which can be translated as hear, listen, heed, and understand appears throughout this week’s Torah portion, Re’eh. Already in the second verse of the portion, we are promised blessing “when you listen (tishmeu) to the commandments of Adonai your God.” Verse three promises a curse “if you do not listen (lo tishmeu).”

A Message from Ron Safier, Executive Director

Greetings from Israel! I am currently volunteering for the IDF for two weeks on an army base in the central district of Israel near a town called Petah Tikvah, its name meaning Door of Hope. Every morning, before we begin our workday, we meet in a common area of the base for a flag raising ceremony. During the flag raising we sing Hatikvah, which means The Hope. This is my third time volunteering for the IDF and each time I am impacted in new ways. This time I am experiencing a feeling of hope.

I am here working with 32 other volunteers from around the world including those from Argentina, Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, and the U.S. I find this to be an amazing representation of the international community who are here to show their love and support for Israel. And many of these volunteers are not Jewish. This gives me great hope that while there is an increase in anti-Semitism at home and abroad, there are many from around the world who are standing up to Jewish hate, regardless of their religion.

Off to college? Please let us know!

Mazal tov on your child’s/children’s 2023-24 year in college!

Temple Beth Sholom strives to create strong, long-lasting relationships with its students, even after they have graduated from high school and are pursuing a higher education. TBS wants to be there for your children as they begin to choose their own Jewish path by keeping in touch.

We can help them feel connected to TBS by having the synagogue send a package for the holidays with a warm note from Rabbi Peltz and Rabbi Wexler. In the past, we charged for these packages, but we are grateful to the Shapiro Family Fund who have made a generous donation that will enable us to send these packages to all of our students FREE OF CHARGE!
