Scope Win and More for FPs!

Tallahassee_ Florida_ USA Capitol at dawn.

Last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed SB 688, legislation that would have established a Board of Naturopathic Medicine within the Florida Department of Health to regulate and license naturopathic physicians. The governor stated in his veto message that “existing Florida law already allows licensed physicians, dietitians, and other qualified healthcare providers to recommend or prescribe naturopathic treatments and natural remedies when appropriate.” He continued by stating that the bill would create unnecessary bureaucracy, including a new licensing board, fees, and education requirements that would require practitioners to obtain postgraduate training outside of Florida. Much like lobbying efforts in 2026 that prevented both an additional physician requirement for sickle cell education or removing critically important vaccine mandates for school aged children, the FAFP remains laser focused on representing the interests of Florida’s family physicians so its members can have that same focus on their patients!

FAFP June Member Spotlight: Holly Vu, MS4

"Wrapping up my third year of medical school, I was able to see myself in every specialty, yet I kept coming back to family medicine. Why? Because family medicine equips us with a diverse set of skills that allow us to adapt and cater to the needs of our patients and community. That is the kind of physician I aspire to become. If you are looking for a specialty that doesn’t ask you to choose between passions, but instead gives you the freedom to pursue them, I hope you’ll give family medicine a chance."
