Blue Zone Principle #6
Wine @ 5
The Power of Intentional Pause
Principle #6 isn't really about alcohol—it actually applies whether you drink wine, iced tea, coffee, or sparkling water. It's about slowing down, connecting with others, and creating rituals that reduce stress and strengthen relationships.
In many Blue Zone communities, people gather at the end of the day to enjoy a glass of wine with friends or family. The greater benefit actually comes from the ritual itself…taking time to slow down, connect with others, laugh, and let the day's stress melt away.
In today's world, we're always connected to work. E-mails arrive after dinner. Phones buzz during family time. Many people end their day the same way they spent it…working.
But high performance isn't just about how hard you work. It's about how well you recover.
Your "Wine @ 5" doesn't have to involve wine. It could be:
- A walk with your spouse.
- Coffee with a friend.
- Dinner without phones.
- Sitting on the porch watching the sunset.
- Fifteen uninterrupted minutes of conversation with someone you care about.
The goal isn't the beverage. The goal is the connection.
When we intentionally disconnect from work and the daily grind, we reconnect with ourselves, and often return the next day with greater clarity, creativity, energy, and purpose.
