Celebrating 10 Years of Respite Community
This month marks the 10-year anniversary of Haywood Street Respite. As we reflect on the past years and remember all the folks who have called Respite home, we extend our appreciation to each person who has brought a meal, sat at the table, or lingered on the porch to share a story or a laugh.
Relationships like those created in Respite are a reminder that connection is foundational for the healing of both physical and spiritual ills.

Habitat for Humanity Work Day this Thursday
The next Habitat for Humanity workday is this Thursday, January 18th. We'll meet at 7:45 am in the parking lot at Haywood Street to carpool to the worksite together. Reach out to Pastor Seth for more information.

Gathering to Process Together
This Tuesday, January 16, from 3:00-4:30, we will gather in the sanctuary for a chance to process together the upcoming shift to no longer having the Downtown Welcome Table on Sundays.
To help us process, we will have Susanne Walker Wilson facilitating the meeting using tools from Resources for Resilience, a training that many companions have taken over the past year. All are welcome to join whether you have taken the training or not! For more information, contact Katlyn.

Have a meal! - Join us on Sunday or Wednesday to enjoy a meal with our community!

Dining Room Clean Up - As always, clean up is one of the places that we need companion support. We promise to make it fun! On Sundays, we need companions from 10:00-12:00, and on Wednesdays from 12:00-2:00

Kitchen Clean-Up - On Sundays from 10:00-12:00 and Wednesdays from 12:00-2:00, we would love for a couple of companions to help us clean up the kitchen and help serve the folks who come in during that time for a meal. You can sign up for this role on the sign-up sheet below!

Norma is settling into her home and enjoying the ability to be in her own kitchen, again. When she left Respite, she promised Robert, our Respite Social Worker, that she would have him and his family over for dinner sometime. Here she is on Wednesday, preparing homemade macaroni and cheese for her special guests. | |

Weekly Ministry Opportunities:
Worship:
Sundays at 11:00 and Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. in the sanctuary
Tuesday Haywood Street Holy Ground Keepers:
8:30 a.m. in the parking lot. Walk the grounds of the church campus and our local neighborhood, cleaning up along the way.
Tuesday Prayer Group: 12:30 p.m. in Room 6. Gather for a time of communal prayer.
Wednesday Art Ministry: 8:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Join us for a time of fellowship, prayer, and art-making.
Thursday Card Making: 10:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Gather together to make cards for our community and friends in prison or in the hospital.

A Haywood Street Story

It was a very cold and windy March Wednesday morning when I made my way to Haywood Street to what had been known for many years as the Haywood United Methodist Church. The building was now owned by Central United Methodist Church and was being used as a mission of the greater United Methodist Church, one of two missions in the state of North Carolina. When I could not find a parking space, an oil company allowed me to park next to their building that was across the street.
I walked to the front doors, but they were locked, so I made my way around the building

to the Fellowship Hall entrance. The old cobbled sidewalk was lined with people standing around visiting or seated next to the outside walls on the bricks. Many were curled up, sleeping with their backpacks as pillows. I didn’t meet their eyes. I had long been taught not to meet the eyes of strangers on the street and these were definitely strangers by anyone’s measure. Looking back, I think about how ignorant I was and how sad that last sentence is as a commentary on our upbringing in current society.
The people made space for me to pass down the sidewalk, and I wandered into the Fellowship Hall. The warmth was welcome, and at first, I wondered why more people outside were not inside. However, it became apparent very quickly. The room was crowded with people, dogs, and baby carriages, as well as large backpacks and bedrolls that had all manner of things tied to them. The round tables around which everyone who was eating were seated were covered in white tablecloths, and china and glasses or coffee mugs were neatly set around them. There were people in bright-colored aprons bringing big bowls and platters to the tables and serving everyone family style.
