The Message this Week

Preaching Text: Acts 6:1-7:2a, 44-60

Stephen’s ministry! Our focus this week shifts to the ‘what happened next’ for the disciples of Jesus. Maybe you’ll be surprised by how messy it is this early in its existence…how quickly they veer from Jesus’ ministry of healing, from his teachings and parables…how quickly they lose sight of the resurrection and the profound experience of the Holy Spirit they all had. Or maybe you won’t be surprised at all. The call of Christians is always counter-cultural in some way- communal instead of individualistic, hopeful instead of despairing in the face of things that look like death, and deeply connected to the whole story of God, from creation to resurrection. The culture around will always exert pressure, will always seep into the structure and the way it is lived out. Stephen’s prophetic ministry of serving reveals these struggles.

God of resurrection hope, help us to focus again on Your Word and to live our lives deeply rooted in your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Is Stephen in the Bible story the same Stephen in Stephen Ministry?

• Put us to work caring for those in need, and give us courage to witness to your transformative love in our lives and the life of the world.
• All of creation is the work of your hand. Teach us to tend to it with great love and care.
• Lift up leaders in the church, including pastors, deacons, and bishops. Guide them with your truth and help them to lead with compassion and understanding.
• Be with doctors, nurses, and all medical staff. Guide their work with wisdom and understanding and skill. Draw near to those who are in need of your healing.
• Be with those who mourn this day. May they cherish memories of their loved ones, and may you bring them peace.
• We remember with joy all the saints who lived and died in the faith. May we follow their example and live our lives to you.
• We pray for those attending the Adult Mission Trip next week: Cathy Mozden, Mitzi Pearson, Joyce Elliott, Craig Elliott, Don Story, Carolyn Story, Scott Ahlgrim, Wende West, Cindy Yeo, Chris Meade, Bob Parks, Steve Albertson.

These and the prayers of all creation we lift to you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
