Slice Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting
Slice’s newest location is in Frogtown, near the intersection of University and Dale. (It’s the neighborhood’s only pizzeria.) Owners; Adam Kado and Hosie Thurmond got connected with the space through Midway member, Neighborhood Development Center, a St. Paul organization that supports local entrepreneurs. Kado says he doesn’t think many restaurants would be willing to set up shop in Frogtown as compared to a neighborhood like the North Loop, where there are more commercial corridors — but if they can create 10 or 15 jobs, he’s not going to compare the numbers.
There aren’t really any pizza places in Frogtown, Kado pointed out. And anecdotally, he said, some neighborhoods in the Twin Cities that are predominantly Black, like Camden in Minneapolis, also happen to be outside delivery boundaries for certain pizza places. It almost feels like redlining, Thurmond said, a discriminatory practice that historically segregated housing and public services by race.
Yes, Slice Brothers is about pizza, but it’s also about empowering communities and fighting disinvestment in Black neighborhoods, Kado said.

Mental Health Awareness Day at the Minnesota State Fair
It was all fun and games and mental health at the Great Minnesota Get Together on August 28 for Mental Health Awareness Day. Organized by Guild's friends at NAMI Minnesota, the Guild team and 50+ organizations like Guild engaged fairgoers of all ages with interactive and educational activities along with resources and information.
On stage at Dan Patch Park, they enjoyed a diverse lineup of children's programming, cultural performances, youth performances, musicians, therapy animals, and more!
It's a testament to this community and all Minnesotans that they incorporate conversations about mental health into fairgoers celebrations. They're already looking forward to next year.
