Emma and Ann will be joining us for COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS

Community Conversations is a NEW Friends & Co program focused on the impact of social isolation and loneliness on older adults and the benefits of strong social connections.

People who feel more connected to others have lower levels of anxiety and depression, higher self-esteem, greater empathy for others, are more trusting and cooperative, and, consequently, others are more open to trusting and cooperating with them. In other words, social connectedness generates a positive feedback loop of social, emotional, and physical well-being.

Unfortunately, the opposite is also true for those who lack social connectedness. Low levels of social connection are associated with physical and psychological health declines and a higher likelihood of antisocial behavior that leads to further isolation.

Friends & Co Community Conversations will be held at various older adult communities, local community events, and with partner organizations throughout the state. These conversations will provide a platform for older adults to connect, share experiences, offer support, and provide valuable feedback to community leaders, policymakers, and service providers regarding the specific needs and concerns of older adults.

Through these conversations, we can create a template for independence and healthy aging in MN.

The conversations will be open-ended, and participants will be encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings about the challenges of aging, including issues related to health, finances, and social relationships. Leaders may emerge and identify the following steps to create strong social connections for themselves and others in their community.

Take the Digital Equity Survey

As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law signed by President Biden in 2021, each state is tasked with creating a Digital Equity Plan. The Office of Broadband Development is eager to hear from us about our access to affordable, dependable Internet.

Each state must create its plan. Minnesota is specifically interested in learning about the status of digital equity for older adults, people with disabilities, veterans, and BIPOC communities. Given that Minnesota is primarily a rural state, there is an assumption that people in urban areas have easy, dependable, and affordable access to the Internet. We know there are holes in that assumption. For example, that cost/affordability is often a barrier for older adults.

Friends & Co has been asked to help collect this information from our friends and members. We have tried to make it as easy as possible for you to participate in this critical survey.

Thank you!

Vital Living at East Side has a program update we wanted to share with you.

Vital Living will be offering an LGBTQ+ cohort for Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexuality Education for older adults March-May.

OWL is a series of 2-hour workshops over ten weeks that uses exercises and techniques to reduce shame, normalize age-related changes, and provide information about relationships.

It is a curriculum that takes a values-based, social justice approach to the sexuality of adults in midlife and beyond – recognizing and honoring the diversity of participants concerning sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and disability.

The topics and issues addressed in the workshops are organized in four broad topic areas: Self-Worth, Sexual Health, Responsibility, Justice, and Inclusivity. Our Whole Lives is recommended for adults over the age of 50, as well as for caregivers working with older adults. This program has no cost, but a commitment to attendance is required.
