The Work of The People | Film Series | America's Unholy Ghosts: The Racist Roots of Our Faith and Politics
This contemplative film series continues throughout the month of May on Wednesday evenings (from 5:15pm to 6:15pm) at Spirit of Joy!
MLK challenged us to investigate the "ideational roots of our hate," and that's what author Joel Edward Goza opens up for us in these films created around some of the themes in his book America's Unholy Ghosts.
The five-session series includes 8 conversation films with Joel, and a discernment and discussion guide with practices to consider, written by Danielle Fanfair.
Each week is a potluck as well, so bring a dish to share!

Sunday Worship Slides:
Our slide backgrounds in worship for this season are from Jesus Mafa. Jesus Mafa is a response to the New Testament readings from the Lectionary by a Christian community in Cameroon, Africa.
Each of the readings was selected and adapted to dramatic interpretation by the community members. Photographs of their interpretations were made, and these were then transcribed to paintings.
They were done in 1973. We hope you enjoy!

Ball ECC Teacher Appreciation:
Teacher Appreciation week is May 5th through May 9th.
Ball ECC has asked if we will supply desserts for a luncheon on Friday, May 9.
All you need to do is drop off the dessert in the office by 10:30am (they have early lunches). Let's give our Ball teachers some SUGAR LOVE!

About the podcast: Creating Space for Queer people in ministry to share their story, connect with others, and find support.
About the host: Josh (He/Him/His) is a student at University of Dubuque Theological Seminary seeking his Master of Divinity and pursuing ordination in the Presbyterian Church USA.
Josh is a trans man and strong advocate for the queer community, particularly in ministry settings. He is passionate lifting voices of the oppressed creating safe spaces and has dreams of writing a book and speaking about his experience as a queer person of faith.

Purses Needed for WIN Project:
WIN (Women in Need) is in serious need of purses. We fill gently-used purses with items (travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, feminine products, etc) and distribute 10 monthly to the Salvation Army and Thriving Hearts.
Please drop off your purses and any toiletries during office hours.

Music, food, fun and fellowship! It was a Fiesta to remember on May 4, 2025!
Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church and former alumni of the Juan Seguin School came together to celebrate the 4th Annual Spring Fiesta. Featuring SOJ's 2025 Community Scholarship Recipient: Danielle Nyame, Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa performers and Dr. Yvonne M. De La Rosa, Executive Director of Teatro, as this year's featured speaker.
