Dear Friends,
I’m excited to share my first monthly Letter to the Community—a space where I’ll keep you updated on the Library’s latest initiatives, challenges, and successes. Starting as the New Rochelle Public Library Director has been an incredible experience, thanks to the warm welcome and professionalism I’ve felt from both staff and patrons. From day one, our incredible staff greeted me with open arms, collaborative energy, and a real commitment to excellence. November Holiday Closings

Forgetting Christmas: Screening and Filmmaker Q&A
Join us for a special community screening of the film Forgetting Christmas on Saturday, November 16, 1:30 pm, presented in collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association, Hudson Valley Chapter. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, R. Cadell Cook.
After vowing never to return, a young woman must come home for Christmas to save her father from trapping himself inside his few remaining memories. This film was made for anyone who wishes to learn more about dementia and its unique challenges for families and caregivers, especially in the African American community where disparities exist.

New Rochelle Plays Hollywood: The Shootist
Join us on Sunday, November 17, 2:00 pm for the final film in our Fall New Rochelle Plays Hollywood Film Series. We'll be screening another "excellent but little-known film", The Shootist.
This was John Wayne's final film and one of his most heartfelt performances. He plays an aging gunfighter seeking a peaceful, dignified end to his life, but his reputation makes this impossible. The story explores his tender relationships with a widow landlady and her son.
Prior to the screening, film aficionado Les Srager will introduce the history of the film and its creative personnel with a discussion period following the screening

Native Americans in Film (Virtual)
In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, we are pleased to present Native Americans in Film; a virtual film discussion presented by Professor William Costanzo, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of English and Film and author of six books on writing and film.
The program on Wednesday, November 20, 7:00 pm will focus on the writers, performers, and directors who helped to tell these stories from their own perspectives.

Friday Night Jazz
Join us on Friday, November 22, 7:00 pm for our next Friday Night Concert with the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band. Coined as "The best that America has to offer ", the Band returns to the New Rochelle Public Library by popular demand! The Band, founded in 1973 by jazz aficionado Dr. Albert Vollmer, brings together the best sidemen of the times who played with such bands as Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter and others.

NRPL "True Crime" Film Series Continues
Join us on Saturday, November 23, 1:00 pm when we present In Cold Blood (1967).
In November 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues. This Academy Award-nominated adaptation of Truman Capote’s fact-based crime novel reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers.
Directed by Richard Brooks – 134 mins. Starring Robert Blake, Scott Wilson, John Forsythe.
New Rochelle librarian and film historian Chris Poggiali will introduce and discuss feature films that examine true crime and detail the actions of people associated with and affected by criminal events.

Writing Workshop

College Essay Writing Workshops
It's college application season and we are here to help. We have three workshops coming up to help students craft their college essays.
On Saturday, November 23, 1:00 - 2:00 pm, Bespoke Education will lead an interactive workshop on structuring an essay, avoiding common pitfalls, and editing and revising, and on Saturday, December 14, 1:00 - 2:00 pm students will learn about addressing challenging topics, reflecting on extracurriculars and leadership, and handling the "why us?" essay.

CPR Workshop for Teens
For tweens and teens in grades 6 - 12. Be ready to save a life! Learn hands-only CPR on Saturday, December 7, from the American Red Cross along with how to recognize and care for a variety of first-aid, breathing, cardiac, and life-threatening emergencies involving adults and children. Great for babysitters!

Coming Soon! World on the Move: 250,000 Years of Human Migration
We are thrilled to share that The New Rochelle Public Library has been selected as one of fifteen libraries to host the traveling exhibition, World on the Move: 250,000 Years of Human Migration. The exhibit, developed by the American Anthropological Association and the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, will open at NRPL on November 25, 2024 and close on January 3, 2025. In addition to the exhibit, several migration-themed programs will be presented.
