Dear ,

When I was a teenager, I couldn't help noticing that the musicals my high school produced usually only had  two roles for women: Ingenue or  Older Character Woman.  The other thirty girls  ended up, by default, in the chorus. We called ourselves " smiling scenery ."

In November of 2013, I pitched Jessica Redish an idea for a new musical that  could change this. She immediately commissioned it.

Mill Girls is the story of the young women who moved from small towns to work  at the newly-built cotton factories of Lowell, Massachusetts, in the 1840s.  They worked 14-hour days to help support their families and somehow still found the  time and energy
to create the first magazine in the world to exclusively feature
content written by women:  The Lowell Offering.

There are  twelve principal female roles, and a  female chorus that can be as  small as four and as large as fifty. Each role is smart, distinct, hard-working,  and complex.

On  June 14 and 15 at 7PM, TMTC is producing a week-long workshop of  Mill  Girls and two free public readings of the show. We are  striving to  raise all funds  for the development of this
groundbreaking new work from or on behalf of extraordinary women . T he campaign is aptly titled  MILL WOMEN.

We are looking to raise a total of $5,000 by June 1 to support this new work. If every individual who receives this email gives $10, we will make our goal!

I hope you'll consider a gift, either on your behalf, or on behalf of  a woman  who has inspired you And I hope you'll join us in June.

Sincerely,

Jess McLeod
Co-Artistic Director
