Updated Guidance on Worship: September 15

Dear Clergy,
Today, the San Diego Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, announced that San Diego County has exceeded the limit of coronavirus cases for the red tier (“Substantial” cases). If our case rate continues at the same level or grows, as of next Tuesday, San Diego County will go back into the highest-risk purple tier (“Widespread” cases). If that happens, by order of the governor, we will no longer be able to offer indoor worship in churches, but will have to return to outdoor worship only in San Diego County. In Imperial, Riverside, and Yuma Counties, we are still only allowing outdoor worship.
I wanted to give you advance notice that this change may be occurring next week. I will keep you informed as we learn more. As always, I am grateful for your commitment to leadership of Christ’s church in our diocese. Keep the faith - God has a mission for us, even when things seem bleak. Perhaps especially when things seem bleak. That’s when people are hungrier than ever to hear the good news of Christ. You have important ministry to do, bringing Christ’s light into a bleak world, and I am thankful for all you do.

Wednesday September 23 at : 3-5pm Pacific / 4-6pm Mtn / 5-7pm Central / 6-8pm Eastern, online via Zoom.
Rev. Jerry Maynard will be holding a 2-hour webinar focused on the roles of clergy members during street demonstrations. He will also be providing guidelines for what to do before, during, and after a street demonstration. Participants will learn what to bring, how to stay calm, what to do in uncertain situations, and how to look out for other demonstrators. Plus Jerry will discuss actions participants can do to maintain physical distance to stay safe during the pandemic. This training gives participants practical tools as they work to create a cohesive culture of peace in their local organizing community. Read More.

September 28 at 3:30pm through September 30 at Noon via Zoom
All clergy in active ministry in the Diocese of San Diego (whether canonically resident or licensed) are expected to participate. If you are in this category but cannot participate, please write to Bishop Susan for an excused absence.
Retired clergy and clergy who are canonically resident in our diocese but physically resident elsewhere are invited, but not required, to participate.
This year’s conference is all online, but the Clergy Enrichment Committee invites you to clear your calendar completely during our scheduled time in order to fully participate and find renewal for your heart, mind and body. We will offer presentations, discussions, free time, and games, along with worship and some time with our bishop.
When the World Falls Apart: Apocalyptic Texts for our Times
We are excited to offer several presentations from the Dean and President of Seminary of the Southwest, The Very Rev. Dr. Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, on the apocalyptic texts we encounter in late Pentecost and Advent which speak to our present chaotic and tumultuous moment. Where do we find hope as preachers, congregational leaders, and human beings who are trying to live faithfully while the world is seemingly falling apart? Read More
