To our Scouts and Scouting Families:
In response to the National Bankruptcy lawsuit, the Hawkeye Area Council has made the difficult decision to sell a portion of the property at Camp Waubeek, which is a part of the Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation, to fund our required contribution to the settlement.
This sale WILL NOT impact our current summer camp operations or other scouting programs! We are still looking forward to welcoming all our scouts and outside youth groups back to Camp Wakonda in the summer of 2023. All resident camps, Wakonda Kids programs, youth leadership courses, and challenge course activities at the councils C.O.P.E. course are accepting reservations for next year.
This piece of property at Waubeek has been under-utilized over the years, and selling the land now, allows us to maximize and improve future camping experiences for our Scouts and their families. Scouting’s mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes, and we need that today more than ever. Camp programs provide a safe and fun outdoor space for youth in the community, and we are dedicated to continuing that tradition at the Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation.
It’s difficult to part with such a meaningful piece of our history, however our responsibility right now is to future generations. This sale allows us to fund our bankruptcy contribution without impacting Scouting in the Hawkeye Area Council, and to return our focus to developing young leaders in the communities we serve.
