A Level Playing Field: Celebrating Women's Equality Day

By Christine Lee, Liquidnet

2025 STA WIF Chair

Women’s Equality Day, marked every August 26, celebrates the 1920 ratification of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. It’s a day to reflect on the progress toward equality and to recommit to breaking down barriers, especially as members of an industry where women have often needed a greater platform. STA Women in Finance (WIF)'s mission statement is to advocate for the unique career needs of women in financial services, which prompts the question - how are we accomplishing this?

STA WIF is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025 - a testament to the hard work of those who launched and nurtured it over the years. While 10 years may seem like a short window of time, much has changed over the past decade, particularly for our industry and the workforce as a whole - the unique career needs of women today are not necessarily identical to those 10 years ago.

Since its inception in 2015, STA WIF has remained focused on creating a more inclusive securities industry, championing women by offering networking, mentorship, and leadership opportunities that help them thrive in a field that has historically been male-dominated. Over the years, one of STA WIF's initatives, #PutHerOnThePanel, reflected efforts to include more women on conference panels as subject matter experts. Since spearheading this campaign, STA has seen a surge in women-led, diverse panels on both the National and Affiliate levels.

However, needs and goals evolve over time. In a post-COVID world, networking and peer-to-peer connection has been redefined, with more industry professionals balancing the global rise in hybrid and remote work with building a network. These new standards, along with return-to-work programs for working parents, offer greater flexibility than ever before. However, the need for professional community remains a staple for our industry, which is why STA WIF launched its first-ever Women in Finance Mentorship Program earlier this year. Born out of feedback from our members (particularly those early in their careers), this new program offers women of all career levels the opportunity to connect with and share perspectives as both rising and seasoned industry leaders.

105 years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment, STA remains committed to fostering women's equality as it evolves over time and being agents of positive change throughout our industry.
