As we reflect on the month of May, the 1889 Foundation is proud to continue investing in the people, programs, and partnerships that strengthen the health of our region. From supporting future healthcare professionals through scholarships to encouraging youth participation in community events like the Path of the Flood race, these initiatives represent the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to creating meaningful opportunities throughout Cambria and Somerset counties.


This month also highlights the importance of community connection and bringing families together through local events, celebrating student achievement, and honoring the history and spirit that continue to shape our region.


The 1889 Foundation remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that positively impact medical education, health and wellness, childhood development, and quality of life across the area. As we look ahead to a busy summer season, we are grateful for the organizations, volunteers, and community members who continue to help make this work possible.
 

Grants Awarded

The 1889 Foundation continues its commitment to expanding opportunity and strengthening communities across Cambria and Somerset Counties through strategic investments in medical education, youth development, and overall wellbeing.
 

Scholarships


1889 Foundation has provided over $215,000 in medical education scholarships so far this fiscal year.

Scholarships Awarded

Conemaugh School of Nursing

Senior and freshman students at Conemaugh School of Nursing were recently awarded approximately $89,500 in scholarships through the 1889 Foundation. Scholarship recipients were selected based on a range of criteria including GPA, place of residence, academic excellence, and clinical performance.


Congratulations to all of the students who earned this well-deserved recognition for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to the nursing profession.

“These scholarships reflect the Foundation’s continued commitment to supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals and investing in the future of our region,” said Sue Mann, President of the 1889 Foundation. “By helping students pursue careers in nursing, the Foundation continues to strengthen healthcare opportunities throughout the community.”


The 1889 Foundation is honored to support students who demonstrate excellence both inside and outside the classroom and remains committed to investing in educational opportunities that create lasting community impact.

1889 Foundation supports free registrations for participants ages 17 & under for local area running events, including the 12th Annual Johnstown Path of the Flood Races held over Memorial Day weekend.

Path of the Flood Race
17 & under: 23% of Participants

The 12th Annual Johnstown Path of the Flood race took place on May 23, commemorating the Great Flood of 1889 while bringing the community together through fitness, history, and remembrance.


The 1889 Foundation proudly supports the event by covering registration costs for all participants ages 17 and younger, helping encourage youth involvement and community engagement. This year, runners ages 17 and under made up 23% of all race participants, a strong reflection of growing youth participation and community spirit surrounding the event.

The 1889 Foundation is excited to support upcoming Families R US community events being held in Johnstown neighborhoods throughout the summer, bringing families together through fun, connection, and community engagement.
