NEWS WORTH SMILING FOR
Thank You For Making 2018 Special
Smilezone friend Chloe wanted to give back to her community in a unique way. After sharing an inspiring presentation on Smilezone with her classmates, the grade six students unanimously voted to do something special. Chloe and her friends spent ten days selling homemade slime and hot chocolate at her school to raise money for Smilezone Foundation.

We asked Chloe what made her so passionate about our cause; "I selected Smilezone because I have volunteered with them many times and knew the money would be going towards making kids feel better while they're going for Treatment."

Thanks to all of Chloe's hard work and dedication, she was able to raise $715 to help make tough days a little brighter for kids facing health challenges!

We are so grateful for the kindness of special leaders like Chloe.

Ask An Expert: Andre Lofters
Did you know our Smilezones are completed in just THREE days?! We interviewed Smilezone's Vice President of Operations, Andre Lofters to share some cool, heart warming and surprising tidbits from the inside.
What's your favourite thing about Smilezone Foundation?
Smilezone Foundation is very unique. In creating these great spaces, we are changing the atmosphere of facilities that are normally drab and dreary. We make the space more exciting for patients, parents and staff while helping the kids forget about their challenges for a while.

W hat is the most memorable moment from any of the builds?
The most memorable moment at each build is always the surprised reaction that you get from not only the kids but the parents and staff. The reveal is often full of emotion, you see the impact the Smilezone has.

How quickly are the builds completed?
All of our builds are completed in 3 days . The majority of the builds are schedule to start on a Friday and completed by Sunday. The Smilezones often end up being a surprise for everyone when they return Monday morning.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve put in a Smilezone?
The coolest thing we have done is create a 2 story mural waterfall for the front foyer at the Pathstone in St. Catherines. It was a huge undertaking but turned out to be amazing

How do choose what themes and items go into the Smilezone designs?
We work very closely with the front-line staff of each facility to see what works and what doesn’t for their particular needs. This is a very critical part of the design process.
The Staff are the ones there every day and know what would work in the selected spaces and what the patients would most likely want to see and use.

What can be the most challenging part of the Smilezone installation process & how do you deal with that?
The most challenging part of the Smilezone install is the fact that we transform these spaces in 3 days. A lot of times we run into unforeseen issues that keep us on our toes but with our great team we're able to solve those issues and make sure we stay on track.

What’s your favourite part about working for Smilezone?
Being able to create amazing new spaces for facilities and seeing the joy and happiness from everyone that is involved whether it be the Patients, Staff, Parents and even those who dedicate their time and effort to making these transformations possible.
Next month we interview Physiotherapist Chantale Cotnoir, if there are any questions you would like her to answer, send us an email and we will do our best to include them in our interview.

Smilezone Transforms
Vanier Children's centre & Pathways Health centre for Children
The Smilezone team was busy this past month transforming Smilezones in London and Sarnia!

Vanier Children's Centre
We created 3 Smilezones in the Positive Choices room at Vanier Children's Centre. We incorporated a lot of fun elements including a weighted blanket, barn doors, a projector, underwater sound machine and even a wall mounted bubble tube to complete the cozy under-the-sea sensory corner! We also revamped the Active Station and Imagination Station to be fun, engaging and therapeutic spaces for the kids.

Pathways Health Centre for Children
Pathways now has three new Smilezones! Our team transformed the Main Waiting Room, Aquatics Waiting Room, and Aquatics Hallway using a Hands on Heat Magic Panel, lots of tactile and sensory play tools, iPads, a bookshelf and so much more! The new Kid's Corner will let the kids play, learn and be their silly selves!
