Museum Receives Master Painting Donation

One of the most important modern paintings of Texas history has been donated to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum by Mr. and Mrs. William Adams of Dallas: Delaying Action: The Battle of Plum Creek. On loan to the museum since 2010, it has been viewed by more than 700,000 visitors from around the world and students coming to the historical center to study Texas history.

The monumental 4-foot by 8-foot oil painting was created over a period of three years by Lee Herring, official State of Texas Artist for 2007. It depicts a scene near Lockhart during the Great Comanche Raid of 1840 which involved an estimated 600 Comanche and stretched from the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast.

The painting has been exhibited at the University of Texas San Antonio Institute of Texan Cultures, featured in 7^th grade Texas history books, in magazine articles, and book covers. Texas Parks and Wildlife recently scanned the painting and reproduced it at the Lockhart State Park Visitor Center.

Its permanent home is now the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, where it is on display in the Taub gallery. This donation coincides with the 200^th anniversary of the Texas Rangers in 2023 and the 60^th anniversary of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in 2024.

June 25th - Ranger Justin Duck from Company F in Waco
July 9th - Major James Thomas from the Director's Office at DPS Headquarters
July 23rd - Retired Ranger Jim Huggins who is a Forensic Science professor at Baylor University in Waco

Locals Love Us 2022 Winner

The Texas Ranger Hall Of Fame and Museum was awarded a 2022 Award Winners in Tourist Attractions by voters of Locals Love Us. There were 29 nominations, and we made the top five. Thank you!

TxDOT Announces 85% Completion of I-35

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has reported the $341 million project on the I-35 corridor through Waco is on schedule to fully open by the end of this year. They're ahead of their projected schedule and about 85% complete. The project has required a lot of patience and we appreciate TxDOT's hard work. We also appreciate our visitors navigating their way safely to the museum.

Pioneering Leader Retired Ranger Christine Nix Honored

The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame hosted a ceremony by the national Zeta Phi Beta Sorority honoring Former Texas Ranger and university professor Dr. Christine Nix. The Sorority was chartered by Howard University, a historically black institution offering 120 degree programs in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Nix is distinguished in several areas including serving as the first female African-American Texas Ranger. She worked as a sergeant and criminal investigator in Texas Rangers Company F in Waco from 1994-2004 and as a Major in the US Army Reserve.

She earned a doctorate from Sam State Houston University and now leads the Criminal Justice Program at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton. Her fields of study include the development and employment of specialized units within law enforcement, victimology and forensic hypnosis. Dr. Nix assisted the historical center with educational and historical programs before retiring from her career with Texas DPS.

Museum Pass at Libraries

While International Museum Day was on May 18th, every day can be Museum Day for locals. Waco residents can check out a free museum pass to visit the local attractions. Hewitt Library and all Waco-McLennan County Library branches participate. Search "museum pass" in the online catalog to see a list of all the passes and check availability. Limit one per adult library card, but passes are good for multiple people.

Army CID Ceremony

The Hall of Fame recently hosted promotion and re-enlistment ceremonies for Army CID personnel.

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is the primary criminal investigative organization for the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense's premier investigative organization. CID is responsible for conducting criminal investigations in which the Army is, or may be, a party of interest. CID Special Agents conduct criminal investigations that range from death to fraud, on and off military bases and when appropriate, with local, state and other federal investigative agencies.
