Dear Students and Parents,
I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the summer months. My name is Katrina Tijerina, and I am looking forward to joining the CSS community as the new Director of College Counseling. My professional background has been based within the admissions side of higher education and I have been able to build long-lasting relationships with college counselors across the country. Additionally, I have sat on several national and regional college counseling boards, presented at national conferences on the college application process, and most recently been selected to be apart of the faculty for this year's annual Guiding the Way to Inclusion at the
National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) conference that will be held in Miami, FL at the end of July.
I will begin my tenure with CSS having come from Denison University, one of the most selective liberal arts colleges in the country, where I have worked extensively to build strategic recruitment plans while simultaneously working with high schools all across the country. Through my experience in admission, I have read close to ten thousand essays and applications and have an excellent understanding of what an outstanding college essay should entail. Additionally, I know exactly what college counselors are looking for from both teacher and counselor recommendations: concrete and concise letters that are straight forward yet detailed.
My professional career began with teaching 9th grade English, and I am elated to be returning to a high school setting. It is my intention to provide effective communication with you all throughout the college search process and to act as a sound board for what can often be a taxing experience.
My official start date with CSS will be in early August, but do note that I have had extensive conversations with the outgoing College Counselor, Rusty Haynes who is working to help bring me up to speed with the needs of your students. Additionally, I will be sending out several email surveys to senior students and parents in the upcoming days to ensure that I am able to develop impactful plans of action for the next upcoming months.
Please join me on Tuesday, August 6 for coffee in the Trianon Library so that I may begin to put faces with names and set personalized appointments. I do plan to meet individually with students and parents to ensure that all questions and concerns are answered. I am truly looking forward to entering the CSS community and will also act as an advisor as well as a co-teacher on the Upper School Experience Centered Seminar to the Pacific Northwest.
I will be contacting senior students and parents with details for the college search and application process in the upcoming days and would like to encourage you all to reach out to me via email at
ktijerina@css.org. I look forward to getting to know the CSS community's students, parents and faculty in the upcoming weeks and throughout the school year.
