Dear Friends,
Over the past several weeks, Prevention Links and many other organizations across the country got some shocking news: our federal grant funding had been cut. Just as quickly, it was restored.
We’re grateful of course, but we’re also unsettled.
While the funding is back, the message it sent was that the support systems we’ve built for people in recovery aren’t as secure as they should be.
For a while now, there haven’t been any new funding opportunities through SAMHSA to support peer recovery services. These services that help people stay housed, connected, employed, and out of crisis. Without funding, there are no programs. Without programs, people are at risk. It's that simple.
At Prevention Links, we’ve seen how peer services change lives. They keep people from slipping through the cracks after treatment, prevent emergency room visits and reduce the strain on hospitals and jails. It's even better for the economy (in case that interests you). Ultimately, they offer something that can’t be replaced: connection.
When funding for these programs becomes uncertain, it hurts our families, neighbors, and communities at large.
Rest assured, we will keep showing up even in a system that treats these vital supports as optional. We know they are essential.
