Dear Prevention,
Families are usually the first to witness the devastating effects of addiction, and they play a vital role in recovery.
Yet, we also know that families face their own challenges—especially when they’re ready to seek help, but their loved one isn’t.
This gap can feel insurmountable.
It leaves family members frustrated, isolated, and unsure of how to move forward. That’s where the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) model comes in.
CRAFT is a research-based approach that equips families with the tools they need to effectively support their loved ones while still taking care of themselves. Unlike some more old-school approaches (not knocking those), CRAFT focuses on:
- Improving communication.
- Building motivation for change.
- Fostering a supportive environment for recovery.
Through the Regional Family Support Center initiative, Prevention Links, in partnership with Prevention Resources, is proud to offer CRAFT to families in the Central Region of NJ.
Our trained Family Support Coordinators work with families 1:1 and in our weekly CRAFT meeting to understand substance use, develop healthy coping strategies, and create plans to support their loved ones—no matter where they are in their recovery journey.
This vital program is available in every county, thanks to funding by the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (NJ DMHAS).
If you’re a family member struggling to navigate the complexities of addiction, know that support is available in both English and Spanish. The recovery journey isn’t easy, but with the right tools and community, it is absolutely possible to rebuild trust, foster connection, and move toward a brighter future.
For more information about CRAFT and family support services in Union and Middlesex Counties, please reach out to us at recoverysupport@preventionlinks.org.
For those outside our region, we encourage you to contact the Regional Family Support Center in your county.
If you're not in a position where you need this service - I ask that you join me in spreading the word. You wouldn't believe how many times someone has come to me privately to let me know that they love someone facing addiction and didn't know about the available resources.
Together, we can empower families to be a catalyst for change and healing. Thank you.
