Dear Prevention,
Addiction isn’t just about substances—it’s about pain.
For so many, substance use begins as a way to cope with unresolved trauma. Experiences like abuse, neglect, or violence leave lasting wounds, and without the right support, people often turn to whatever numbs the hurt.
Research confirms what many already know firsthand:
the deeper the trauma, the higher the risk of addiction.
But there’s hope.
When young people understand their emotions, learn healthy ways to cope, and feel supported, they’re far less likely to turn to substances.
That’s why mental health literacy and trauma-informed care are game-changers—they provide the tools for healing before addiction ever takes hold.
At Prevention Links, we’re putting this approach into action through NJ4S, an initiative that brings mental health education and prevention services directly to students across Union County.
By building resilience, fostering trust, and creating safe spaces for young people to heal, we’re working to break the link between trauma and addiction—one student at a time.
This work is personal.
It’s urgent.
And it wouldn’t be possible without a community that believes in the power of prevention.
Thank you for being part of this mission. Healing trauma means saving lives.
