The Jason Foundation would like to share “A Friend Asks” app. Coaches are encouraged to have student-athletes download the free app for a ready resource available for a friend, or themselves, when struggling with mental health and/or suicidal ideation.

Coaches vs. Overdoses presented its promising program in both Nashville and in Albuquerque at NOCAD, where Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy White joined us. Randy lost his son-in-law to a fake opioid. Coaches vs. Overdoses was piloted at 453 high schools across 5 states in the fall of 2023 including 3 private schools in Cobb County, GA. The Georgia Athletic Coaches Association is excited about the ability to work with the Coaches vs. Overdoses program to tackle to youth opioid and overdose crisis. In 2023, 112,000 Americans died from overdoses. When you look at their materials including prevention playbooks and in-home drug disposal tools, you will see how GACA helping bring this program statewide will save lives and make a difference. Coaches vs Overdoses is a youth prevention and harm reduction program designed to reduce opioid misuse and overdose through education and empowerment. The program provides resources to coaches so they can excel as leaders in their community, gives parents tools to educate and support students, and critical information to students so they can make informed decisions regarding prescription drug misuse. The strategy is centered on leveraging the mentorship, relationships, and influence of athletic coaches in the distribution of the Coaches vs Overdoses Prevention Playbook, an educational guide to the dangers of opioid misuse, and the distribution and use of an easy-to-use in-home medication disposal solution packet. It also provides PSAs ranging from Hall of Famers like Randy White to Slam Dunk Champions like former Atlanta Hawk Spud Webb to raise awareness.

The Georgia Army National Guard is hosting an Educator Day which is intended for our centers of influence. Is this something you would be able to distribute to the High School Athletic Directors or coaches that are part of GACA? I have already distributed it to all Superintendents and HS Principals across the state. We are just trying to maximize reach to increase participation. I appreciate your consideration of this request.

During this unique experience, participants will have the chance to explore the various programs and initiatives designed to support students in their personal and academic growth. Our team will provide valuable insights into how collaboration with the Georgia Army National Guard can enrich the educational experience for students, offering a unique perspective on leadership, teamwork, and discipline.
