CHANGES ARE IN THE WORKS

“To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.” These words from one of our newest saints, St. John Henry Newman of England, is most appropriate for all of us in these times. Our parish is once again going to have a change of priests and we are ramping up for the changes we will have once we gather for Mass again.

Father Joseph has been assigned to St. Boniface Parish in Anaheim as of July 1st. He will serve that large parish (6500 families) by being in charge of the Vietnamese community, and by serving with 2 other priests in all of the ministries of this active, tri-lingual parish. We will figure out a time and way to say goodbye to Father Joseph who has a very fond place in our hearts.

Father Evan Simington, a priest of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, will arrive here from Rochester, New York, in mid-July. His primary ministry will be as Administrator of St. John Henry Newman Parish in Irvine. This parish was established to minister to Anglicans who have become Roman Catholic. Father Evan will be able to assist here with Masses and other duties as his time allows. I look forward to welcoming Father Evan to our parish.

Roberto Gutierrez, a seminarian for our Diocese, will arrive here as an intern in the middle of August. Having completed all of his theological studies in Mexico, Roberto is now honing his pastoral skills and improving his English abilities in preparation for Ordination in the future.

Returning to Mass and the Sacraments will be wonderful once again. Though no date is set as of this writing, we are preparing the Church for your return, and preparing for good Hospitality so that all might pray in a clean, safe, and holy environment. Some of the basic changes we will have in place are the wearing of masks, usage of hand sanitizers, social distancing both outside and throughout the church for Mass, having only one entrance and one exit, restricting the numbers of people at each Mass, different Communion procedures, and sanitizing the Church in between Masses. In order to do this well, we need volunteers (18-64 years of age) to sign up and be trained so we are ready when we can get started. Please call the office 249-4091, or go to our website, or sign up below for this new Ministry of Hospitality.
Recorded Masses will continue even when we open the church for Mass. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass will remain in effect even when Mass is available to attend in person. This is so that those who choose not to come for various serious reasons (age, health, concern for safety) may continue to participate virtually as we have for the past months. Work continues to get our Mass livestreamed (so you can participate in real time).

We continue to pray for one another and ask God’s blessings in these times of change.

Msgr. John Urell
P.S.
Recently Father Craig Butters was reminded of a homily he delivered on June 3, 2012. He sent me a copy of it and with his permission, I would like to share it with you as the topic is timely and, in true Father Craig style, beautifully expressed...
