Rutgers' Role in Bringing Needed Change and Equal Justice Under the Law

The Chauvin verdict does not change the fact that as a nation we must work much harder to deliver equal justice for all, and to build a United States that lives up to its ideals. A mother shouldn’t have to teach her children to live in fear that a police officer may treat them with suspicion—or worse—just because of the color of their skin. Systemic racism that denies economic, educational, and social opportunity to a full half of our nation has got to end. More.

Firearms Laws Curb Rates of Gun Violence Across United States

States with stricter firearms laws reported lower suicide and homicide rates, according to a study published in the Journal of Public Health conducted by the New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center at Rutgers. The GVRC is joint undertaking of the RU School of Public Health and the RU-Newark School of Criminal Justice. More.

Cancel More Student Debt: RU-Camden Sociologist

In the flurry of actions that President Joe Biden has taken, more than $2 billion in student loan debt has been canceled -- a small percentage of all student loan debt nationwide. One billion was waived for 72,000 borrowers who attended schools that engaged in deceptive or illegal practices or closed abruptly, and $1.3 billion was canceled for 41,000 borrowers who are permanently disabled. There is more to do, argues Joan Maya Mazelis, an associate professor of sociology at RU–Camden. More.
