January 16, 2021
Dear Brothers,

I’m writing today to inform you of an announcement that will be made this evening to the parishioners of St. Anthony’s, Maui.

With a heavy heart, I want to let you know that the Marianists will be withdrawing from the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Community, Wailuku, Maui.

St. Anthony's is a special place, with roots on the island dating back more than 150 years. And while the Marianists formally assumed leadership of the parish in 1976, our closer relationship with this community began with the founding of the Wailuku School for Boys in 1883 at the invitation of the Fathers of the Order of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

We are proud to have contributed to the cultivation of this diverse parish community of more than 900 families. At so many Sunday celebrations of the Eucharist, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and many adventures, we have stood side-by-side, trusting in God and each other.

But like many religious communities, the Marianists are facing serious challenges in today's world, from a dwindling and aging population of priests and brothers. Ultimately, after careful discernment and prayer, we have determined that the spiritual, social and physical needs of St. Anthony's Parish would be now best served by the Diocese of Honolulu.

The withdrawal will take place July 1, 2021. While this means no active Marianists serving the island of Maui, the Society will still maintain a significant presence in the Hawaiian islands, including Chaminade University of Honolulu and Saint Louis School. The Marianists will also continue to provide ongoing support and resources to the existing Lay Marianist groups in both Oahu and Maui. Similarly, we are pleased to continue our sponsorship of St. Anthony's school.

I want to express my appreciation to the entire parish for the support they have given us. The province is very grateful for Fr. Bunda’s leadership and to the Marianist community for their years of service. More details will be given in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we ask that you keep the parishioners and the Marianist community of St. Anthony’s in your prayers.

In great gratitude and in service of the Blessed Mother,
Fr. Oscar Vasquez
