Dearest TBC Family,
I, like so many of you, am devastated and angered this morning at the news that Roe v. Wade was overturned, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion. To be clear: this is not a decision about life - if it was, the children in Uvalde and Newtown and Parkland and so many other places would not be dead. It's about fear and power - and legislating what women can do with their bodies.
For us as Jews, Roe's repeal goes against our deepest convictions - of what constitutes life, of bodily autonomy and of pikuach nefesh, the saving of a life (the mother's). Tonight at our PRIDE Shabbat service, in defiance of this autocratic, discriminatory, presumptuous ruling, we mark and honor the beautiful rainbow that makes up the Jewish people and all peoples as we celebrate the individuality and freedom to choose that we believe and understand is inherently human.
