A Message from the President

President Jim Morton

Dear Sea Devil Community,

The new academic year has arrived, and with it, an exciting energy from students as they return to campus from summer break. CFCC’s growing reach and reputation are evident, with over 7,342 applications submitted for the Fall 2024 semester, representing 1,402 high schools across 47 states. As enrollment continues to rise across all areas - basic skills, continuing education, economic and workforce development, and university transfer programs - we’re continuing to implement innovative strategies to support our students and strengthen our community’s workforce.

As enrollment continues to climb, the need for expansion on our campuses continues. There are several major capital projects underway:

  • G Building, located at the corner of Walnut and Front Street, has undergone a complete interior renovation, including a new roof and HVAC system. Starting in mid-September, our Economic and Workforce Development staff and the Small Business Center will move into this building to offer students and clients more accessible access to enrollment, registration, and services.
  • In November, we will begin expanding our Barber School on Walnut Street to accommodate the growing demand for this program. This expansion will add approximately 1,000 square feet, providing space for ten additional student chairs and new office and storage areas.
  • We are currently in the design phase of a capital project to double the size of our Surf City campus, creating much-needed space and facilities to serve our students and community better. The expansion will include science labs, dedicated dirty lab spaces for hands-on learning, and a veterans center to support our veteran students.
  • Phase II of the renovations on the Dan and Sheila Saklad Health and Human Services Center are underway. This phase includes the addition of a new dental clinic to accommodate more students and expand our community clinical services, new simulation laboratories for nursing students, and expanded classroom and office spaces.

Growth takes various forms, including the launch of new programs. Beginning this fall, we're excited to introduce four new offerings: Simulation & Game Development, Marketing & Artificial Intelligence (AI) tracks, Career Pilot, and Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certification. These programs are designed to meet the increasing workforce demands in these rapidly evolving industries.

As we embark on this new semester, it’s clear that Cape Fear Community College is not only growing in numbers but also in its capacity to serve our students and community. The ongoing expansion of our facilities, along with the introduction of innovative new programs, reflects our commitment to providing top-notch education and workforce training. I look forward to the continued progress we’ll make together, and I’m confident that these investments will have a lasting impact on our students’ success and the vitality of our region. Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to CFCC!
