A Message from the President

President Jim Morton

Dear Sea Devil Community,

May has been a whirlwind of activity at Cape Fear Community College. With spring classes ending, commencement, and summer classes beginning, there's never a dull moment on any of our campuses. On May 10, we celebrated the achievements of 1,203 graduates. This diverse group exemplifies the spirit of lifelong learning and the inclusive nature of our community. As always, it was a joyous occasion filled with inspirational moments that highlighted the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, and staff. Join me in celebrating their achievements and congratulating the Class of 2024!

I am also thrilled to announce the significant expansion of our Surf City campus, made possible by a $4 million allocation from the North Carolina Legislature. This funding will enable us to double the size of the campus, creating much-needed space and facilities to better serve our students and community. The expansion will include science labs, dedicated workforce development lab spaces for hands-on learning, and a dedicated veterans center to support our veteran students. Currently, in the design phase, this project highlights our commitment to providing top-notch educational resources and support services in Pender County. We look forward to sharing more updates as we progress.

Cape Fear Community College continues to work toward eliminating financial barriers for students. While we're still improving the financial aid process, we introduced a year-round scholarship application in March 2024. This flexible approach allows students to apply once per academic year, with scholarships awarded monthly. We also offer emergency funding of up to $1,000 for students facing short-term financial crises. Additionally, the state introduced the Next NC scholarship this year, covering full tuition and fees for North Carolinians from households earning $80,000 or less, helping students avoid repayment burdens and supporting costs like books and housing.

Last but certainly not least, Cape Fear Community College's Wilson Center, under the leadership of its new Executive Director, Zach Pluer, recently announced the 2024-2025 PNC Broadway and the Beach series. Beginning in October and running through June of 2025, the center will host eight hit Broadway shows that truly have something for everyone. Shows include Tina, Hadestown, The Addams Family, Dear Evan Hansen, The Book of Mormon, Clue, Ain’t Too Proud, and Mystic Pizza. Tickets for all shows are now on sale at wilsoncentertickets.com.

As we move forward into summer, I am excited about the many opportunities and developments at CFCC.
