A Message from the President

President Jim Morton

Dear Sea Devil Community,

At Cape Fear Community College, our mission is to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and support necessary to thrive in their educational pursuits and future careers. I am excited to share a major initiative that will further strengthen our commitment to student success and workforce development.

CFCC is proud to be one of only eight community colleges in North Carolina chosen to participate in the pilot cohort of the NC Community Colleges (NCCCS) Boost program. This innovative initiative is designed to accelerate students’ progress through college and into high-wage, in-demand careers. Driven by a historic $35.6 million grant from Arnold Ventures, the largest private investment ever received by the NCCCS, this program will provide invaluable support to our students and strengthen our local economy.

Modeled after a proven program that has increased graduation rates and reduced completion times in other states, the Boost program offers dedicated advising, timely support, and financial incentives to help students stay on track and complete their degrees more quickly. Through this initiative, CFCC will break down barriers to education and ensure that more students achieve their goals while supplying our region with a highly skilled workforce.

This investment in student success is also an investment in our community. We look forward to welcoming 150 students into this program beginning Fall 2025 and collaborating to expand access to education and economic opportunity. I encourage prospective students and community partners to explore how this initiative can contribute to shaping North Carolina’s economic future.

Featured Sea Devils

When Frank Chasteen left his 40-year career in the automotive industry, he wasn't just switching careers. He started a whole new chapter in his life. With years spent as a mechanic and in auto parts, Frank made the courageous decision to return to school and pursue a degree in accounting at CFCC.

Before Ian Appling moved to Wilmington in 2020, he had already built an impressive career. Ian earned a master's degree in public health and served as New Hanover County's epidemiologist, but despite his background in infectious disease control, Ian felt a pull toward a different kind of healthcare, direct patient care.

Benny Hill is more than a talented musician. He's a teacher, mentor, and inspiration to his students and the CFCC community. With over 40 years of experience playing saxophone, Benny uses his love of music to guide his students and support their dreams.

Marcela Saucedo Gangoiti's journey with CFCC's English as a Second Language (ESL) program is a full-circle story. Before becoming an ESL Assessment Retention Specialist, she was an ESL student herself.
