A Message from the President

President Jim Morton

Dear Sea Devil Community,

As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of education and workforce development, Cape Fear Community College is committed to providing our students with pathways to success that align with the demands of the modern workforce. Apprenticeships represent a critical component of this commitment, offering students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while pursuing their education.

Our current apprenticeship program has seen remarkable success, with students benefiting from immersive learning experiences and establishing meaningful relationships within their chosen industries. Presently we have 136 participating employers spanning 12 diverse industries, providing an opportunity for over 547 students to actively engage as pre-apprentices or apprentices.

Apprenticeship opportunities are mutually beneficial for both the student and the employer. Our program directors, faculty, and career development coordinators work with each employer partner to determine what positions they are looking to fill, the skills required to be successful in these positions, and the type of employees they hope to attract. From there, our instructors work with the students to match them to the employer best suited for their success.

Historically, apprenticeships have predominantly concentrated on blue collar fields such as welding, plumbing, pipefitting, and HVAC. Recognizing the growing demand for opportunities in white collar fields, CFCC introduced apprenticeship openings in Accounting and Information Technology in 2023.

As we continue to expand our offerings, we are eager to broaden and grow our apprenticeship program. Whether you represent a local business, nonprofit organization, or government agency, we invite you to explore the possibility of partnering with us to create new apprenticeships. By working together we can grow a skilled workforce and support the economic growth of our community.

I want to thank you for your continued support of Cape Fear Community College. If you are interested in learning more about how your organization can get involved in our apprenticeship program, I encourage you to contact Shawn Dixon, North Campus Provost, at sdixon@cfcc.edu. Thank you,

Jim Morton
