A Message From Chief Fletcher
Dear Friends,

Remembering George Floyd! A year ago the nation mourned the tragic death of George Floyd. Millions of peaceful demonstrators gathered to call for justice and reforms to a system that has impacted communities of color. With all of the challenges we’ve faced as a community and nation over the past year, I wanted to recognize and pay tribute to those who have organized for change. We must learn from the mistakes of the past as we forge a new future free of bias and injustice.

From civil rights activists to local community leaders, the movement continues to fight for social justice and reforms to an archaic system. This is a time of deep reflection, introspection, and healing. Together, we can create the future we desire!

APD's Reentry Division - Reentry Services
In 2011, the Adult Probation Department created a Reentry Division to supervise operations of San Francisco's Reentry Council, and to develop and implement a portfolio of reentry and rehabilitative programs for justice-involved adults. We currently contract with 32 community-based organizations which manage 53 reentry programs in San Francisco. Here is a shortlist of our annual accomplishments:

  • 3,500 clients served at our reentry center (CASC)
  • 487 clients accessed our transitional housing programs
  • 48,825 days our transitional housing programs reduced homelessness
  • 1,167 housing applications completed by clients in our housing programs
  • 120 clients were placed in permanent housing
  • 558 clients accessed Clinical and Reentry Case Management
  • 226 clients were placed in jobs
  • 115 clients accessed the CASC's Medication Management Program
  • 229 clients access drug treatment services
  • In partnership with OEWD and CHALK, APD launched a stipend employment program for our undocumented clients

We are proud of the work of our community partners and the impact we have collectively made in the lives of our City’s most vulnerable people. Our Reentry Divison and Reentry Council are managed by formerly incarcerated professionals who truly represent the clients we serve.

Community Advisory Board
In 2020, the Adult Probation Department (APD) launched a Community Advisory Board of formerly incarcerated individuals who represent areas of the City impacted by crime and violence. In tandem with our community partners who provide services to our clients, the Community Advisory Board serves as APD’s liaison to the community, provides input on reentry challenges, advises us on community engagement strategies, and shares insight and feedback for ongoing reentry and realignment planning.
Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As our nation reopens from the tragic global pandemic, now more than ever, awareness about mental health and wellness is paramount. Forging alliances to meet the needs of our community actually begins by listening when the community speaks. It's important to learn about developing symptoms, early warning signs, and taking action! Nearly one in five U.S adults live with mental illness. In 2017, the Adult Probation Department launched California's first behavioral health-focused reentry center managed by experts in mental health services, UCSF/Citywide Forensics.

FORMR
FORMR is a local company committed to reducing recidivism and construction waste. Every year, there are more than 500 million tons of construction debris created in the United States which accounts for 40% of all trash. In addition, people that are formerly incarcerated face unemployment rates of over 27% which contributes to recidivism rates of over 50%. FORMR's mission is to create thoughtfully designed objects crafted from construction debris while empowering formerly incarcerated individuals with a second chance.
