In our continued commitment to serving our community and providing current information, we have some important updates in this week’s message.

County Administrator’s Monthly Message

This month I would like to share some words and lead through the lens of our Mission. Cultivating and maintaining a shared mission requires that the Board of Education, parents, community members, administrators, classified employees, and teachers are committed to the mission. When this happens, learning becomes collaborative and goal-oriented. Furthermore, our mission statement provides focus. Educating, challenging and inspiring students is our core work and we must all be committed to keeping student learning at the forefront of all we do.  To access my monthly message, click here. 

Black History Month

Our District is proud to join the nation in celebrating National Black History Month. A month dedicated to honoring and celebrating the valuable contributions that African Americans have made in our country and our communities. In an effort to recognize the significant contributions of African American, we are kicking off a series by introducing African American owned businesses throughout the City of Inglewood. 

Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen LA natives and owners Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan offer simple and nourishing breakfast and lunch offerings, along with unique coffee, juices and pastries. They take pride in creating fun environments for people to connect with each other and themselves. As young and ambitious entrepreneurs, they thrive to inspire their customers to climb their own Hilltop, as they have done for themselves, personally and professionally.

National School Counseling Week

In honor of National School Counseling Week February 6 - February 10, 2023, our District would like to recognize our school counselors, who work tirelessly by helping our students examine their talents, strengths, abilities and interests. School counselors offer unique support, as they are the individuals who work in professional partnerships with teachers and support personnel to provide an educational system where students can realize their true potential and focus their efforts on improving academic achievement for all students. The work of our school counselors is an integral part of carrying out our District mission and we are extremely grateful for the significant impact they make in the lives of our students every day. 

IUSD Stellar Student Spotlight

Gabriella Logeman is a young Renaissance woman with a bright future! This City Honors Preparatory High School (CHIPS) senior is a proud recipient of the POSSE Scholarship, courtesy of the Posse Foundation. She is one of 90 L.A. area students selected for this prestigious honor. She has received a full tuition scholarship to the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she plans on majoring in nursing. She aspires to become a geriatric or pediatric nurse one day. Gabby was inspired by her grandmother to become a nurse. From 9th to 11th grade, Gabby cared for her grandmother who was in home hospice. Working alongside her grandmother’s caregivers, Gabby developed a love for leadership and care. 

Being successful academically wasn’t always easy for Gabby. In 9th grade, she was failing several classes at one point. She tells me that she never felt academically inclined up until 10th grade, so she didn't put her best foot forward. Her teachers advised her she wasn’t living up to her potential. Her mom and aunts were already going through so much with her grandmother’s illness, and Gabby didn't want to put further stress on the family by continuing to get sub-par grades.

In 10th grade Gabby looked inward and realized that she could perform well academically, she just had to work harder. She developed self confidence and bloomed. After the pandemic, she started the Black Student Union (BSU) at CHIPS. As founder and president, Gabby created fun and educational events for students, such as Black history escape rooms during Black History Month. Additionally, she was invited to speak at an IUSD board meeting to discuss BSU, and also won a $1,000 scholarship at the Black College Expo for writing an essay about why going to college is important to her. Gabby also participated in the Women in Entertainment program, which pairs successful female mentors in the entertainment industry with female high school students in underserved areas. Gabby received a full year of mentorship from CAA Agent Shone Jemmott, a $10,000 college scholarship, and a Macbook. Finally, Gabby is also a member of the CHIPS Mandarin Club and El Milagro (Latinx Club). She also runs track and received a gold medal for shot put (1st place for Ocean League). 

Gabby says her greatest inspiration is her grandmother, because of all that she was able to accomplish, despite her circumstances. Her grandmother was raised in poverty in Birmingham Alabama, wore donated clothes, had 9 siblings, but still sought a better life. She received a full scholarship to Alabama A&M and eventually became a middle school teacher. Gabby believes that going to college is a homage to her grandmother. Gabby will be a 3rd generation college student, with her grandmother setting the standard for Black excellence in her family.

Gabby has this advice to share with her fellow IUSD students: “It doesn't matter how you start, but finish well!”

District Committee Meeting Updates

In an effort to keep our community informed, our Asset Management Advisory Committee will take place on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at the District Office Board Room. The meeting is open to the public to attend, listen, and provide public comments. UTK Scholars Enjoy Fun Activities at Their School Sites 

Our TK scholars at Beulah-Payne P-8 STEAM Academy had the opportunity to explore the great outdoors, as they were invited to participate in a nature exploration and appreciation field trip at the Sooky Goldman Nature Center in Franklin Canyon. Students participated in hands-on interactive lessons addressing environmental science and took a fun hike to get up close and personal with flora and fauna of our local Santa Monica Mountains. At Highland TK-6 Elementary, our UTK scholars are enjoying movement activities that incorporate the learning of letters, numbers, and shapes, alongside training their ears to hear sounds in words.  Thank you to our dedicated teachers for their support that they bring forth to our students and families everyday.

Our District would like to share some highlights and updates on the District’s current and completed school modernization and improvement projects. The modernization and improvement projects have been funded through the use of Measure GG and Measure I bonds funding proceeds, alongside private donations. IUSD’s Martin Luther King Jr. Art Expression Contest and Exhibition

The Inglewood Unified School District will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art Expression Exhibition on Saturday, February 18, 2023, alongside the City of Inglewoods’s Black History Month Celebrations. The District will kick-off its 2023 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art Expression Exhibition taking place in downtown Market Street at the Miracle Theater Event Space (230-234 S. Market Street) from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., featuring K-12 student artwork themed: Why must the dream go on and where do we go from here?, live entertainment, and fun-filled family activities including a TK-3 Literacy Village. Mensaje del Administrador del Condado

Este mes me gustaría compartir algunas palabras y guiar a través de la lente de nuestra Misión. Cultivar y mantener una misión compartida requiere que la Junta de Educación, los padres, los miembros de la comunidad, los administradores, los empleados clasificados y los maestros estén comprometidos con la misión. Cuando esto sucede, el aprendizaje se vuelve colaborativo y orientado a objetivos. Además, nuestra declaración de misión proporciona enfoque. Educar, desafiar e inspirar a los estudiantes es nuestro trabajo principal y todos debemos comprometernos a mantener el aprendizaje de los estudiantes a la vanguardia de todo lo que hacemos. Mes de la Historia Afroamericano/a

Nuestro Distrito se enorgullece de unirse a la nación para celebrar el Mes Nacional de la Historia Afroamericana. Un mes dedicado a honrar y celebrar las valiosas contribuciones que los afroamericanos han hecho en nuestro país y nuestras comunidades. En un esfuerzo por reconocer las contribuciones significativas de los afroamericanos, estamos iniciando una serie presentando negocios de propiedad de afroamericanos en la ciudad de Inglewood.

Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen Nativos de Los Ángeles  y propietarios de Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, Yonnie Hagos y Ajay Relan, ofrecen desayunos y almuerzos simples y nutritivos, junto con café, jugos y pasteles únicos. Se enorgullecen de crear entornos divertidos para que las personas se conecten entre sí y consigo mismas. Como emprendedores jóvenes y ambiciosos, prosperan para inspirar a sus clientes a escalar su propia Hilltop, como lo han hecho ellos mismos, personal y profesionalmente.

Semana Nacional de Consejería Escolar

En honor a la Semana Nacional de Consejería Escolar del 6 al 10 de febrero de 2023, nuestro Distrito desea reconocer a nuestros consejeros escolares, quienes trabajan incansablemente para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a examinar sus talentos, fortalezas, habilidades, e intereses. Los consejeros escolares ofrecen un apoyo único, ya que son las personas que trabajan en asociación profesional con los maestros, el personal de apoyo para brindar un sistema educativo donde los estudiantes puedan desarrollar su verdadero potencial y concentrar sus esfuerzos en mejorar el rendimiento académico de todos los estudiantes. El trabajo de nuestros consejeros escolares es una parte integral de llevar a cabo nuestra misión del Distrito y estamos extremadamente agradecidos por el impacto significativo que tienen en la vida de nuestros estudiantes todos los días.

Estudiante Destacado de IUSD

¡Gabriella Logeman es una joven renacentista con un futuro brillante! Esta estudiante de último año de City Honors Preparatory High School (CHIPS) se enorgullece de recibir la beca POSSE, cortesía de Posse Foundation. Ella es una de 90 estudiantes del área de Los Ángeles seleccionados para este prestigioso honor. Ha recibido una beca de matrícula completa para la Universidad de Wisconsin en Madison, donde planea especializarse en enfermería. Aspira a convertirse algún día en enfermera geriátrica o pediátrica. Gabby se inspiró en su abuela para ser enfermera. Desde el 9 al 11 grado, Gabby cuidó a su abuela que estaba en un hospicio en casa. Trabajando junto a los cuidadores de su abuela, Gabby desarrolló un amor por el liderazgo y el cuidado.

Tener éxito académico no siempre fue fácil para Gabby. En el noveno grado, en un momento dado estaba reprobando varias clases. Ella dice que nunca se sintió académicamente inclinada hasta el décimo grado, por lo que no dio lo mejor de sí. Sus maestros le advirtieron que no estaba a la altura de su potencial. Su madre y sus tías ya estaban pasando por mucho con la enfermedad de su abuela, y Gabby no quería poner más estrés en la familia al seguir obteniendo calificaciones por debajo del promedio.

En el décimo grado, Gabby miró hacia sí misma y se dio cuenta de que podía desempeñarse bien académicamente, solo tenía que esforzarse en sus estudios. Desarrolló confianza en sí misma y floreció. Después de la pandemia, fundó la Unión de Estudiantes Negros (BSU) en CHIPS. Como fundadora y presidenta, Gabby creó eventos divertidos y educativos para los estudiantes, como las salas de escape de la historia afroamericana durante el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana. Además, fue invitada a hablar en una reunión de la junta del IUSD para hablar sobre BSU y también ganó una beca de $1,000 en la Black College Expo por escribir un ensayo sobre por qué ir a la universidad es importante para ella. Gabby también participó en el programa Mujeres en el Entretenimiento, que une a mentoras exitosas en la industria del entretenimiento con estudiantes de secundaria en áreas desatendidas. Gabby recibió un año completo de tutoría del agente de CAA Shone Jemmott, una beca universitaria de $10,000 y una computadora Macbook. Finalmente, Gabby también es miembro del CHIPS Mandarin Club y El Milagro (Latinx Club). También corre en pista y recibió una medalla de oro en lanzamiento de peso (primer lugar de la Ocean League).

Gabby dice que su mayor inspiración es su abuela, por todo lo que pudo lograr, a pesar de sus circunstancias. Su abuela se crió en la pobreza en Birmingham, Alabama, vestía con ropa donada, tenía 9 hermanos, pero aún buscaba una vida mejor. Recibió una beca completa para Alabama A&M y eventualmente se convirtió en maestra de secundaria. Gabby cree que ir a la universidad es un homenaje a su abuela. Gabby será una estudiante universitaria de tercera generación, con su abuela estableciendo el estándar de excelencia afroamericana en su familia.

Gabby tiene este consejo para compartir con sus compañeros estudiantes de IUSD: “¡No importa cómo comiences, pero termina bien!”

Los Estudiantes de UTK Disfrutan de Actividades Divertidas en sus Escuelas

Nuestros estudiantes de TK en la escuela Academia STEAM de Beulah-Payne P-8 tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar el aire libre, ya que fueron invitados a participar en una excursión de exploración y apreciación de la naturaleza en el Centro de Naturaleza Sooky Goldman en Franklin Canyon. Los estudiantes participaron en lecciones interactivas prácticas que abordaban la ciencia ambiental y realizaron una caminata divertida para conocer de cerca la flora y la fauna de nuestras montañas locales de Santa Mónica. En la escuela de Highland TK-6, nuestros estudiantes de UTK disfrutan de actividades de movimiento que incorporan el aprendizaje de letras, números y formas, además de entrenar sus oídos para escuchar los sonidos de las palabras. Gracias a nuestros maestros dedicados por el apoyo que brindan a nuestros estudiantes y familias todos los días.

Boletín Informativo de las Instalaciones de Diciembre/Enero

Nuestro Distrito desea compartir algunos aspectos destacados y actualizaciones sobre los proyectos de mejora y modernización escolares actuales y completados del Distrito. Los proyectos de modernización y mejora han sido financiados mediante el uso de los fondos de los bonos de la Medida GG y la Medida I, junto con donaciones privadas. Exposición y Concurso de Expresión Artística Martin Luther King Jr. de IUSD

El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Inglewood organizará su Exhibición Anual de Expresión Artística de Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. el sábado 18 de febrero de 2023, junto con las celebraciones del Mes de la Historia de los Afro Americanos con la ciudad de Inglewood. El Distrito dará inicio a su Exposición de Expresión Artística de Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2023 que tendrá lugar en el centro de Market Street en el Miracle Theatre Event Space (230-234 S. Market Street) de 11:00 a.m. a 5:00 p.m., que presenta obras de arte de estudiantes de K-12 con el tema: ¿Por qué debe continuar el sueño y hacia dónde vamos desde aquí?, entretenimiento en vivo y actividades familiares llenas de diversión que incluyen una aldea de alfabetización TK-3.
