April 20, 2020

Dear Members of the Lamplighter Community,

Last Friday Governor Abbott announced the order stating that schools will remain closed until the end of the school year. Undoubtedly, educators, parents, and especially our students, are crestfallen. Each day we experience the limits of technology as it relates to our ability to truly reach out. No matter how robust the technology, children need one another and the adults in their lives to truly be fulfilled.

When we left campus on March 13, no one had any idea that COVID-19 would grip our nation and cause the distress and disruption to daily lives that we are experiencing. However, in every challenge, there is success. In this age of disruption, we have found new innovations. The Lamplighter faculty demonstrate that the education of the youngest learners, while complex to deliver virtually, is our highest priority. Online lessons are being delivered by teachers and completed by students with the help of parents. But, still……it just isn’t the same.

There are four major points in this letter. The first relates to the completion of the academic year, the second is summer camps, third is a celebration for the Seniors, and fourth is beginning the 2020-2021 school year.

Completing the 2019-2020 School Year
In the next two weeks Mrs. Mullens and Ms. Raney will send information about the Developmental Records and Parent Conferences. The school year ends on Wednesday, May 20 and conferences are scheduled for Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22.

Summer Camps
As of this writing, summer camps are temporarily postponed. We are hopeful that as the curve continues to flatten through social distancing, The Lamplighter School will be able to offer FunCamp and Camp Lamplighter this summer. Hopefully, sooner than later. We are eager to have students return to campus, but respect the order that indicates groups greater than 50 people are unable to gather.

Graduation for the Class of 2020
Over the weekend I reached out to parents of Seniors to report that we are planning graduation late in the summer in Klyde Warren Auditorium. We are eager to celebrate with our students. In light of the coronavirus, we will only host the third graders and their parents, along with Seniors and their families. Following graduation, we will have the Senior Parade!

2020-2021 School Year
As we prepare for the opening of the 2020-2021 school year, I assure each family that the safety of our students, parents, faculty, and staff is the highest priority. This summer you will receive full details of the protocols and Standard Operating Procedures that we are developing to ensure the safety of all.

As we navigate the coming weeks, please feel free to reach out with any questions that arise. We are in unusual times and more communication is helpful. There will be several mailings that will be sent to each family in the next few weeks. If you have any questions, I can always be reached at [email protected] .

Sincerely,
Joan Buchanan Hill, Ed.D.
