New Legal Aid Governance Agreement Signed July 16, 2025

"On July 16, Law Society of Alberta President Stacy Petriuk, KC, signed the new Legal Aid Governance Agreement on behalf of the Law Society. The signing of this agreement represented a significant milestone for the parties to the agreement who worked tirelessly and collaboratively to achieve an outcome of shared goals for the long-term sustainability of Legal Aid.

I would like to express my most sincere thanks to past-President, Darlene Scott, KC, Bencher Nicole Stewart and Aaron Martens, KC, for their contributions. Throughout the negotiations, we benefited from their engagement, professionalism and expertise, and we are grateful for their service."

2025–2026 Indigenous Summer Student Program: Firm and Organization Recruitment

The Indigenous Summer Student Program (ISSP) is recruiting firms and organizations to participate in the 2025/2026 summer student recruitment cycle. The Law Society of Alberta works with law firms, organizations, and law schools across Canada to connect prospective employers with first (1L) and second year (2L) Indigenous law students.

For many years, this program has received ongoing support from law firms as well as government and other organizations resulting in employment opportunities for 1L and 2L Indigenous law students. The Law Society does not have a role in the hiring process or the employment relationship; however, we will provide ongoing support and education to participating students, firms and organizations.

We strongly encourage participating firms and organizations to interview all ISSP students who apply. The interview process helps students prepare to enter the legal world and any feedback firms and organizations can provide to ISSP students is valuable. However, there is no obligation for a firm or organization to hire an ISSP student.

Visit our website to learn more about the Indigenous Summer Student Program. Firms and organizations that are interested in participating can review the criteria for this program and submit an application.

Without the ongoing support of firms and organizations, we would not be able to offer this valued program to Indigenous law students. Please submit your applications as soon as possible, and if you have questions reach out to the Program Coordinator.

Updated Resource – Privacy Breached: Now What?

For hackers, lawyers represent a high value target. Billions of dollars flow through Alberta lawyers’ trust accounts every year (on average $150B annually) and lawyers’ files contain extremely valuable personal and commercial information.

It is also said that the weakest link in any security system lies somewhere between the office chair and the keyboard. Innocent mistakes are among the most common reasons why law firms suffer security breaches.

All of this requires law firms to be diligent in how they handle and protect their data. You are the last line of defence in data protection.

For more information on privacy breaches, how to prevent them and how to report them if they do happen, view the full resource on our website.
